“More To Come”: Boeing CEO Says 200-Jet China Order Could Rise To 700 Aircraft

While China has agreed to purchase 200 jets from the US manufacturer, Boeing, the latest news from the OEM is that this is just an initial order, and it is expecting further aircraft orders/commitments. The commitment for this large purchase came during the time of the US Presidential visit to China, thus marking the first large-scale commitment from the nation that Boeing has received in recent years.

While Boeing’s presence in the Chinese aviation market was jeopardized due to political tension between China and the US, Airbus, in recent years, took this to its advantage and expanded its footprint within China significantly. Therefore, the 200 aircraft commitment, along with the anticipated orders, could help Boeing reposition itself within the Chinese market.

Much Larger Numbers Forecasted

Two weeks ago, during the US Presidential visit to China, Boeing received an order commitment from China for 200 aircraft, which is due to be finalized and announced later this year. This marks a major win for Boeing, whose position within the Chinese market has been affected in recent years due to geopolitical tensions between the US and China. That being said, the commitment for “200” aircraft was reportedly a much lower figure than what investors had hoped for.

However, the latest reports from Reuters indicate that Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, states that this commitment is just an “initial tranche” of what could potentially be a much larger deal. Ortberg had traveled to China alongside President Trump and stated that the talks between the two leaders were successful and could lead to further orders and announcements.

Reports indicate that some sources forecast possible further orders in the range of 300 to 500 aircraft. This would then increase the total number of new orders from China to potentially up to 700 aircraft, excluding previous orders and existing aircraft backlogs. Simple Flying has reached out to Boeing for further details on this matter.

Boeing’s Current Presence In China

China, being a booming aviation market, is important for Boeing. In fact, prior to the US – China trade dispute and political tensions, about 25% of the total Boeing 737 aircraft deliveries were to the Chinese market. This is indicative of why it is important for Boeing to be able to remain strong within the Chinese market. Boeing’s latest data on aircraft orders and deliveries (as of April 30) indicate that the manufacturer has a delivery backlog of 98 aircraft due for Chinese carriers and lessors.

For context, the manufacturer delivered 675 aircraft to Chinese airlines and leasing companies from 2016 to the end of April, 2026. However, the number of deliveries over the past five years only accounts for 152 of these aircraft, marking a significant decrease in aircraft delivery rate across the past decade. The latest order commitment for 200 aircraft is still being allocated by the Chinese government to the three state-owned airlines, after which Boeing will be able to negotiate with the carriers on a one-on-one basis.

The three carriers, Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern Airlines, all utilize a mix of Airbus and Boeing fleets, both on the narrowbody and the widebody side. Furthermore, all three carriers are also operators of China’s own COMAC C919 aircraft, which the airlines operate domestically. Additionally, all three carriers are customers and operators of Boeing’s 737 MAX program on the narrowbody side and the Dreamliner program on the widebody side. Of course, there are other airlines in China operating Boeing aircraft as well.

Data from either manufacturer’s global market forecast indicates that over the next two decades, the airlines within the industry will need over 49,000 new aircraft delivered to cater to the growing passenger demand. Another key point that both manufacturers agree on is the fact that China will not only be one of the regions with the largest fleets, alongside the likes of North America and Europe, but China will also be among the markets with the largest growth in passenger demand.

This is also why in recent times, Airbus has taken advantage of the situation and has been winning big within the Chinese markets, as they wish to establish their dominance for the years to come. Most recently, Airbus won a $15.8 billion deal for 101 narrowbody jets, including multiple variants of the Airbus A320neo family, with China Eastern.

All things considered, only time will tell how many more aircraft China will commit to with Boeing, as part of this broader deal. It will also be interesting to see how the American manufacturer will re-establish itself within the Chinese aviation market going forward. Because all signs indicate China is a prime market for both Airbus and Boeing when it comes to the future of aviation growth.
