Monroe County Region high school football roundup for Friday, Oct. 2


Two thirds of the way through the regular season for high school football teams in Michigan more than a third of the Monroe County Region teams are undefeated.

St. Mary Catholic Central, Jefferson, Bedford, Ida and Gibraltar Carlson all rolled to 6-0 on Friday, Oct. 2.

Only Bedford was seriously tested.

A late touchdown shaved Jefferson’s final margin to 9 points, but SMCC, Ida and Carlson all won by 30 points or more.

Whiteford took command of the Great Lakes Conference race by topping the 50-point mark for the second straight week against a previously unbeaten opponent.

Bedford 38, Dexter 35

ANN ARBOR – Bedford built a big lead as Masyn Moran ran for 186 yards and 4 touchdowns, but Dexter kept fighting back.

“We were kind of teetering on taking the game out of their hands all night, then they would make a good play and get right back in the game,” Bedford coach Dave Mifsud said. “We didn’t get complacent, we just didn’t put them away.

“It’s a great sign that we were able to answer the adversity.”

The outcome was in doubt until John Derian intercepted a pass for Bedford with 1:30 left.

Luke Whetstone ran for 169 yards and a score and Alex Mapes kicked a field goal.

SMCC 50, Milan 0

RIVERVIEW – Cole Reinhardt ran for 127 yards and scored four touchdowns as St. Mary Catholic Central rolled to 6-0.

Blake Lechy threw touchdown passes to Reinhardt and Bennett Schafer.

Grant Lewis racked up three sacks to lead the defense and Brenton Carter intercepted a pass.

Vince Harris (25 yards) and Bryce Bellino (52) also had scoring runs.

“The kids played well,” SMCC coach Adam Kipft said. “I am super proud of the effort. They took care of business.”

Milan dipped to 1-5.

Ida 43, Dundee 13

IDA – Grant Pfeiffer scored four of his five touchdowns in the first half as Ida remained unbeaten.

Pfeiffer found the end zone on runs of 1 8, 80, 17 and 2 yards.

The Blue Streaks also got a 41-yard touchdown run from Ryan Ashcraft.

Dundee remains winless.

Gibraltar Carlson 48, Southgate Anderson 14

SOUTHGATE – Gibraltar Carlson took another step toward defending its Downriver League championship.

Brennan Hudson ran 1 and 48 yards for the first two touchdowns. Austyn Lawrence ran for a TD and threw scoring passes of 21 and 50 yards to Adrian Blackmon.

Grayson Malac (12 yards) and Wally Sindone (14) also ran for touchdowns for the Marauders, who are 6-0 for the second consecutive season.

“We came out physical and ready to play on both sides of the ball tonight,” Carlson coach Jason Gendon said. “Proud of our kids for taking care of business and not looking ahead to next week.”

Jefferson 36, New Boston Huron 27

NEW BOSTON – Jefferson’s defense stepped up, holding Huron far short of the school-record 64 points the Chiefs posted a week ago.

“We had a good game plan going in,” Jefferson coach Rob Beaudrie said. “We didn’t think they could stop us on offense. We slowed thing down a little bit with the rushing attack.”

Drake Jones ran for 225 yards and scored on runs of 2, 17 and 22 yards as Jefferson moved to 6-0 for the second straight season.

Grady Brooks threw a touchdown pass to Hunter Barton and ran 14 yards for a TD.

Huron quarterback Cash Moczdlowsky completed 10-of-25 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns to Jamil Brown.

Brown (11 yards) and Mark Moore (15) also ran for TDs for 4-2 Huron, which rallied after trailing 22-0 at the half.

Whiteford 50, Edon 29

EDON, Ohio – Whiteford trailed 29-20 late in the third quarter, but scored four unanswered touchdowns to pull away in a battle for first place in the Great Lakes Conference.

Brek Ruddy scored on passes of 75 and 55 yards from Tre Eitniear and a 55-yard run.

He set a school record with 191 receiving yards and ran for 161.

Eitniear threw for 269 yards and the 3 TDs and ran for a score.

Mason Luzier caught a touchdown pass for the Bobcats, who have reeled off four straight wins after opening the season 0-2.

Monroe 35, Jackson 24

MONROE – Monroe (2-4) made it a happy homecoming by improving to 2-0 on Bill Bunkelman Field.

The Trojans scored 22 points in the second quarter on touchdowns by Landin Turner-Pomeroy, Timmy Richards and Landon Loveland.

Richards and Turner-Pomeroy added scoring runs in the second half.

“It was good to be home and nice to get a win,” Monroe coach Kyle Reed said. “It was really special to have the home fans and the band playing for you. Everything came together.”

Riverview 59, Flat Rock 42

FLAT ROCK – Joel Scully threw for 403 yards and six touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough for Flat Rock (2-4).

David Riddle (6 receptions, 180 yards, 4 TDs), Jordan Godfrey (4 receptions, 97 yards, 2 TDs) and Alex Beaudrie (6 receptions, 78 yards) were his favorite targets.

Riverview improved to 4-2.

Grosse Ile 44, Airport 16

GROSSE ILE – Airport could not find a way to earn its first victory of the season.

Colton Alston caught a 25-yard touchdown pass for CJ Lukosavich and Jay’Len Strong ran 27 yards for Airport’s other TD.

“Emmett Kruise had an interception and Roman Day had a solid game at the linebacker,” Airport coach Derek Anderson said.

Grosse Ile won its second straight after an 0-4 start.

West Unity Hilltop 23, Summerfield 14

WEST UNITY, Ohio – Summerfield dropped its fourth straight following a 2-0 start.

Mason Trout ran for 163 yards on 38 carries for the Bulldogs and Austin Taylor and Trent Miller ran for touchdowns.

Hudson Crots had 5 catches for 70 yards and Caleb Sheppard 4 for 60.
