Minister Sidhu speaks with Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs

April 25, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, spoke with Mario Lubetkin, Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, to advance Canada’s engagement with Mercosur and deepen bilateral economic ties.

Minister Sidhu reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to advancing negotiations toward a Canada–Mercosur free trade agreement, highlighting the potential to expand market access, strengthen supply chains, and create new opportunities for businesses and workers across the region.

The ministers discussed the positive momentum in Canada–Uruguay economic relations—with two-way merchandise trade increasing more than 50% since 2024—and explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration in sectors such as sustainable agriculture and agri-food, renewable energy, and digital services. They also noted the potential to expand trade and encourage further Canadian investment in Uruguay.

Both ministers agreed to remain in close contact as negotiations advance, as well as to continue building a stronger trade partnership that supports economic growth and long-term prosperity.
