The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, met with Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, on the margins of the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, Ontario.
The ministers discussed the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and emphasized its importance in strengthening economic ties between the two countries. They agreed on the importance of helping businesses seize new opportunities under the CEPA, including improved market access, predictability and protection for investors, as well as enhanced cooperation in sectors such as agri-food and seafood, mining and energy and the digital economy. Minister Sidhu welcomed Indonesia’s recent progress toward the agreement’s ratification and said he looks forward to its entry into force. Minister Sidhu thanked Minister Hartarto for Indonesia’s role as Co-Chair of the ASEAN-Canada free trade agreement negotiations and its ongoing leadership in advancing the negotiations toward conclusion.
With bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Indonesia reaching $6.7 billion in 2025, the ministers discussed opportunities to deepen commercial partnerships, strengthen two-way investment and support trade diversification and resilient supply chains, as well as advance cooperation in priority sectors, including defence industrial collaboration.
