Minister Sidhu announces Canada’s ratification of the United Kingdom’s CPTPP Accession Protocol

July 3, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, today announced Canada’s ratification of the Protocol on the Accession of the United Kingdom (U.K.) to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Once in force, the agreement will further opportunities for Canadian businesses through integrated supply chains and the single set of rules applied across CPTPP markets.

The U.K.’s accession will complement the existing Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement (TCA), providing Canadian businesses with more opportunities in goods, services and investment, as well as government procurement. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • securing access in key services sectors of the U.K., including distribution, construction and architecture
  • receiving the same treatment as domestic providers in U.K. services markets
  • gaining access to procurement opportunities from public institutions in the U.K at all levels of government, including regional and local

Canadian investors will also benefit from the certainty, transparency and protection provided by the CPTPP for their investments in the U.K. market, which will complement the protections currently provided through the TCA.

Canada’s ratification of the accession protocol builds on Canada’s long-standing economic and people-to-people ties with the U.K. It highlights Canada and the U.K.’s shared values on open and rules-based trade and strengthens Canada’s commitment to diversifying its trade with reliable partners around the world.

The protocol will bring the CPTPP into force between Canada and the U.K. on September 1, 2026, completing the U.K.’s accession process.
