The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with Johann Wadephul, Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, during his visit to Canada.
As Canada and Germany celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, Minister Anand and Minister Wadephul reaffirmed the strength of the relationship between the two countries and their shared commitment to transatlantic cooperation, international peace and security and the rules-based international order, and as well as unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a just and lasting peace in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
The ministers addressed Russia’s ongoing hybrid activities and Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s full solidarity with Germany following Russia’s hybrid attack at Leipzig Airport on August 4. They stressed the importance of continued cooperation among transatlantic Allies to strengthen resilience, safeguard democratic institutions and reinforce NATO’s collective defence.
The ministers discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation on economic security, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies. They welcomed ongoing efforts to strengthen resilient and diversified supply chains, including through critical minerals partnerships that support the energy transition and advance manufacturing.
Building on Prime Minister Mark Carney and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s announcement at the NATO Summit of the launch of negotiations toward a Canada-Germany Joint Strategic Partnership, the two ministers welcomed progress to deepen cooperation in areas including security and defence, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy and investment.
The ministers also highlighted the signing of a General Security of Information Agreement, which establishes a trusted framework for the secure exchange and protection of sensitive information between Canada and Germany. The agreement will facilitate closer cooperation on defence and security matters by enabling the secure exchange of intelligence, sensitive operational information, and technical data related to defence and security activities, further strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
Minister Anand and Minister Wadephul agreed to remain in close contact and to continue working together to advance shared priorities and reinforce security and prosperity across the Euro-Atlantic region.
