Yesterday, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Maka Botchorishvili, Georgia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the margins of the Pathways to Peace: Second International Conference on Returning Ukrainian Children, Detained Civilians, and Prisoners of War, held in Toronto on September 28 and 29, 2026.
The ministers discussed Russia’s ongoing unprovoked and unjustifiable war against Ukraine, regional security developments in the Black Sea, and opportunities to strengthen Canada-Georgia cooperation in support of regional and Euro-Atlantic security. Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and condemned Russia’s continued occupation of the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The ministers reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and their shared commitment to advancing a just, lasting and comprehensive peace there. Minister Anand thanked Minister Botchorishvili for her participation in the conference and for Georgia’s continued leadership and engagement in the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, and the ministers underscored their commitment to upholding international humanitarian law.
The ministers also discussed Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, democratic development and regional connectivity. Minister Anand reaffirmed Canada’s support for the Georgian people’s aspirations for closer Euro-Atlantic integration and welcomed Georgia’s role in advancing the Middle Corridor to strengthen regional connectivity and support resilient supply chains.
As Canada and Georgia will mark 35 years of diplomatic relations, the ministers highlighted the importance of continued dialogue between Canada and Georgia and their commitment to maintaining close cooperation on regional security and strengthen their economic partnership, while continuing to cooperate on other shared international priorities.
