The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was moved out of intensive care after she was wounded in a shooting inside the couple’s Northern Virginia home, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, is making steady improvement after she was allegedly shot by the couple’s adult son on Sunday night in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Ashburn, Reid told reporters at Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The three-time Super Bowl winning coach was going through a list of his injured Chiefs players when — without prompting — he provided an update on Mia Bieniemy’s medical condition.

“She’s doing great. She’s doing better and great from where she was, out of the ICU unit and making progress,” Reid said.

“So, we’re happy about that. EB (Eric Bieniemy) is still with her and that part’s important that that stays in place.”

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the couple’s 27-year-old son, was arrested and booked on suspicion of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to a sheriff’s statement.

Authorities have not yet revealed any possible motive for the shooting, only calling it a “domestic” disturbance.

Dramatic video and audio of the law enforcement response showed a chaotic scene outside the Bieniemy home early Sunday evening.

Deputies could be seen carrying the wounded Mia Bieniemy away from the home as other law enforcement agents, rifles drawn, headed toward the house on Northpark Drive where Elijah Bieniemy was arrested.

The wounded Mia Bieniemy still had the strength to call 911 herself, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told NBC News earlier this week.

The suspect fired a .22-caliber Ruger “causing injuries to the area of her left forearm and left shoulder with a projectile traveling across her chest,” according to a criminal complaint filed in support of Elijah Bieniemy’s arrest.

The coach’s son was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center with his next court date set for Aug. 31.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, has one of the most high profile assistant coaching jobs in pro football, running the Kansas City attack that includes future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce, the new husband of 14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift.

It’s not known when Eric Bieniemy will be back with the Chiefs, who open the exhibition season on Aug. 15 and regular season on Sept. 14.

“We stay in touch with him, keep him abreast of everything that’s going on,” Reid said. “He’s got the (practice session) tape, watching whatever spare time he’s got there.”

Representatives for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Public Defender could not be immediately reached for comment on Wednesday.
