Media Update – Severe flash flooding and mudslides along the Nepal-China border

August 26, 2026

Canada’s thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as with all those affected by the floods in Nepal.

Global Affairs Canada continues to monitor the situation in the region and takes the safety and security of Canadians and our own personnel abroad very seriously.

The Department is aware of Canadians who have been affected by the floods. Canadian consular officials in the region are following the situation closely with local authorities and are standing ready to provide consular assistance.

As of August 26, 2026, there are 820 Canadians registered as being in Nepal and 5 Canadians in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China according to Global Affairs Canada’s Registration of Canadians abroad system. These numbers provide only an estimate of Canadians in the region as registration is voluntary. They may also include individuals who have registered with no plans to travel. Therefore, the number of registrants for any given area may not be fully representative of the number of Canadians actually residing in or visiting that area.

Due to power outages in the region, establishing full communication with those on the ground may be challenging and may take time.

Global Affairs Canada is in contact with humanitarian partners and stands ready to contribute to humanitarian efforts as needed.

Our Travel Advice and Advisories (TAAs) for Nepal and China were updated on August 26 to add information on flash flooding along the Nepal-China border.  Canadians should regularly consult the TAAs for up-to-date information about the situation and sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive important updates directly.
