Canada’s thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims. Global Affairs Canada officials remain in regular contact with the families of the missing Canadians and continue to provide consular support. A dedicated consular official is serving as the primary point of contact for each affected family, providing direct updates as information becomes available, coordinating communications with government officials, and helping ensure families receive timely and consistent information.
Global Affairs Canada is aware of approximately 30 Canadians and permanent residents in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region whose whereabouts and well-being have not yet been confirmed. This number may fluctuate as new information becomes available, and as officials are able to establish contact with people in affected areas.
Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand spoke with Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shishir Khanal, to express Canada’s condolences and solidarity following the devastating floods in Nepal. Canada is providing $5 million in humanitarian assistance funding to support relief efforts in Nepal. The ministers agreed to stay in close touch. (See social media post).
Canadian officials are also in regular contact with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China who have confirmed that response efforts continue to locate missing Canadians in Gyirong County.
Authorities in both countries have confirmed that operations remain active and that significant resources continue to be dedicated to locating missing persons, despite challenging terrain, damaged infrastructure and difficult access conditions.
Search teams are using a range of specialized tools and technologies, including drones, helicopters, search dogs and other advanced equipment, while continuing ground-based search efforts in affected areas.
Authorities have indicated that disaster victim identification efforts are ongoing and may include forensic and DNA analysis where necessary. They have also advised that access to some locations remains limited due to debris, unstable terrain and damaged transportation routes.
Canadian officials will continue to engage closely with local authorities and will provide further updates as additional information becomes available.
