Matt LaFleur wants to remain Packers coach, resolution expected soon

Matt LaFleur made it clear he wants to remain the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, and he’s operating in the aftermath of Saturday’s NFC Wild Card Round loss to the Chicago Bears as if he’ll remain the head coach of the Packers.

Expect a resolution soon. LaFleur declined to speak about his contract and future, but he said he briefly spoke with team president Ed Policy on the plane home from Chicago and confirmed he would be meeting with Policy in a more official capacity on Sunday night or Monday.

Now entering his first full offseason on the job, Policy will determine if LaFleur — who has just one year left on his current contract — is to remain the Packers coach for 2026. If the decision was up to LaFleur, he would be back in Green Bay for his eighth season in charge.

“Of course. I mean this is one of one. I love this place. I love the people,” LaFleur said. “I love our players, our locker room, everybody in our organization. This is a unique place. The community has been outstanding. I grew up in the Midwest and it has the same type of vibe as Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Unless you’re from here, you don’t realize how friendly everyone is…this is a unique place, a special place. My kids love it here, my family loves it here.”

Even with rumors about his future swirling after another devastating playoff defeat, LaFleur said he immediately dove into the tape of Saturday night’s loss to find about “what went wrong.”

“My sole focus is trying to find solutions to our issues and why things went awry,” LaFleur said. “We had plenty of opportunities to slam the door shut and we didn’t get it done.”

The Packers led 21-3 at halftime and had an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter but ended up losing 31-27 in one of the worst postseason collapses in league history.

It’s possible a decision will be made on LaFleur’s future as soon as Monday. Policy and the Packers really can’t wait around to decide; the coaching carousal is already spinning, and if LaFleur is out, finding a new coach becomes the franchise’s new top priority.

If LaFleur is back, changes on the coaching staff are expected. Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is a head coaching candidate with five interviews requested, and LaFleur said he expects Hafley to get one of the jobs. All options, including an external hire, are on the table in terms of replacing Hafley if he departs. LaFleur also did not commit to special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia returning in 2026.
