Matt Damon Confirms Work on Tricky New Jason Bourne Movie

Just as The Odyssey makes landfall, star Matt Damon has offered an update on his new Jason Bourne movie with Conclave and All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger.

The actor touched on the future of his beloved action hero during a conversation on ESPN’s The Rich Eisen Show. In between working with Christopher Nolan and teasing another Oceans movie, he said he’s been working with Berger to revisit the Bourne franchise.

“There’s a great director named Ed Berger – he did All Quiet on the Western Front,” Damon said. “He’s a wonderful director, and we’re talking about it,” Damon said. “We’re just trying to figure it out. We’re trying to nail the story down because I’d love to do it. It’s just that thing where, if we do it, we want it to be like the first three.”

Damon first played Jason Bourne in Doug Liman’s The Bourne Identity in 2002. He’s since shown up for three sequels: The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), and Jason Bourne (2016). The only entry he skipped out on starring in was The Bourne Legacy, which was directed by Andor mastermind Tony Gilroy and starred Avengers veteran Jeremy Renner.

That would make the new film Jason Bourne 6 as long as things progress smoothly. Word of a revival for the franchise originally arrived in 2023, with first details promising Berger’s involvement but not necessarily Damon’s. Universal then picked up the rights in 2025, but as time has passed, it’s now been 10 years without a proper entry. Damon is hoping they “can crack it,” saying that he thinks they “have a line of sight on how to do it.”

“It’s tough because it’s not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission,” he said. “People can even change the person playing Bond. It’s a linear story, so it makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you’re giving people what they want, but also enough new stuff. It’s a tricky one.”

Damon hasn’t exactly had too much free time to make Jason Bourne his priority. This weekend, he helped launch Nolan’s The Odyssey, which he stars in as Odysseus. He also showed up in 2023’s Oppenheimer and was featured in prominent roles in projects like Ford v Ferrari, The Last Duel, Air, and The Rip.

While the next Jason Bourne movie comes together, you can read IGN’s 7/10 review for the 2016 installment. We praised the movie at the time but said it failed “to hit the dizzying height of films 1-3.”
