Manitoba bill would reduce availability of flavoured vapes; one group wants more

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government is planning new restrictions on the sale of flavoured vaping products, but one group says the idea does not go far enough.

A bill now before the legislature would forbid the sale of such products in businesses in urban areas that allow children to enter.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara says flavoured vapes can be a gateway for kids to go on to cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Adults will still have access to the products, and Asagwara says that will allow adults to use flavoured vapes as a way to quit cigarettes.

The Manitoba Lung Association says some other provinces have gone further by banning most flavours of vaping products or raising the age to buy the products to 21.

The group’s executive director, Juliette Mucha, says she’s hoping the government toughens the bill before it is passed into law.
