Mailbox: Wordcrafting, Backtracking, One-Handed Titles – Nintendo Life Letters

“bla bla BUT”

Thanks to various third party games I have double dipped on Switch 2 such as Final Fantasy XIV and eventually Call of Duty, it honestly feels like my Switch 2 is the main console of the household now. We just need some TV streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix now (yeah why not use TV or other consoles bla bla BUT… convenience!).

Will Nintendo ever allow media streaming apps on Switch 2? YouTube is one of the most used apps on our original Switch, and back in the Wii U days, Netflix was our most used application. It just feels like a missed opportunity not to be able to use YouTube and Crunchyroll on Switch 2.

I imagine it’ll be launched in five years when everyone’s lost interest, but it’s surely a matter of time for YouTube. Beyond that, adding significant hours of streaming to your standard gaming use would have some effect on the system’s longevity. Given that your TV these days almost certainly has those apps already, I’d assume it’s just low in everyone’s priorities. – Ed.

“the wordcrafting”

You guys frequently have such great subheadings, that I wish there was a way to like them and measure how great they are. Perhaps there’s some script your techies can generate that will automatically put the subheading as the first comment on each article. Then readers can like that first comment if they really appreciate the wordcrafting. Since subheadings show up on the main News page, it would also lead to more article clicks, as some might open the article just to “like” the subheading.

Honestly, best part of the job. When a man is tired of puns, etc. We have an award for Best Tag at our annual Hookshot meetup – Jim’s walked it a couple of years in a row, if memory serves. Some of our finest work is buried in the backend in little-seen guides.

Glad you enjoy them, although part of the appeal is being throwaway. The tag is often just supplementary info that wouldn’t fit in the headline proper, too — having “Special Edition to follow two weeks later” as first comment would be odd. – Ed.

“kind of the whole point”

Dear Nintendo Life,

When did backtracking become such a bad thing? Call me crazy, but I actually enjoy backtracking in video games. Not only does it improve immersion (in real life, solutions are rarely presented in a convenient straight line), but it also tests your memorization and exploration skills. To me, there is something so satisfying about being presented with an obstacle that you don’t know how to overcome. Later, you gain a new ability and think, “Oh! I’ll try this ability on that one thing I found earlier!” It seems like many games today prioritize immediate gratification over the long-term satisfaction of problem solving, especially for something like a 3D platformer. Playing a 3D platformer and complaining about backtracking is like playing a boxing game and complaining that your opponent keeps punching at you. That’s kind of the whole point of the game. Get good.
The Backtracker

Our tolerance for backtracking has gone down as the number of great games available has shot up. Any whiff of padding or filler has people noping out quicker than ever before, so maintaining a sense of meaningful progression through intelligent design is vital, whatever the game. Your design better be impeccable if you’re frustrating people and hoping they’ll stick around for a payoff. – Ed.

“misconceptions”

Hi lovely people!
Recently I was looking to get a keyboard to play FFXIV on the switch 2 and to my surprise there is no guide out there comparing the different options existing and WORKING for the switch 2. There also seems to be a lot of misconceptions that any 2.4ghz keyboard would work on the switch with a USB dongle but it’s not the case. To tell you how bad it is, even the AI is lost! So I thought that could be a good article if you have the means to test keyboards to finally tell which work and which don’t.

cheers!

AI lost? Inconceivable!

Something to look into. The topic has come up before, but it feels incredibly niche. Let us know in the comments if you’re a keyboard user on Switch 2. – Ed.

“wee pink hairy bum”

Dear Alex & Co,

Nintendo is trolling us. They must be. The eSlop is crammed ever further with [cough] one-handed titles, shovelware, AI bullcr@p and asset flips, which I seem to remember they claimed to want to cut down on.

My wee pink hairy bum they did. It’s more prevalent than ever, but this… this is as bad as I’ve seen.

I just saw THE most depressing title on sale. HENTAI PROJECT 6 7.

I got 6-7’ed twice in Japan back in January, once by a kid in Nara train station while checking the seat on my ticket (a full ‘six-seven’, not even a ‘roku-nana’), and again by a sign in the grounds of Himeji Castle. This is just as offensive.

Now I speak a little Japanese, so I know what hentAI/oppAI/ecchi mean. Not everyone does. Little Johnny and Millie almost certainly won’t, and no parent wants that conversation before they turn 5. They should either let us block such slurry or just admit they really couldn’t give a toss who sees it.

Speaking as someone who regularly updates our eShop database, yes, Hentai Project 6 7 is just the tip of the fatberg. Every single week brings dozens more.

As to the ‘one-handed titles’ themselves — or any of these low-effort, sloppy games — each to their own. You do you. Ahem. But yes, we absolutely should be able to block publishers/developers from view on the eShop.

From a parental standpoint, Nintendo would point to the parental controls app and other options available to keep kids from seeing these things. But I agree, this constant, extremely visible stream of low-effort software is still a massive issue, and it’ll spread to Switch 2 soon enough. – Ed.
