Macrofinance meets AI: Evaluating alignment between LLMs and economists



Many public institutions are now experimenting with AI tools to support surveillance, supervision, and policy analysis, raising questions about which analytical tasks can be delegated to machines and which still require expert judgement. Comparing several GPT models with IMF economists’ assessments of Article IV staff reports, this column shows that today’s best models perform well on structured, factual tasks but remain less reliable on nuanced rating questions, where human judgement still matters.
