Lufthansa has made multiple changes to its European network, which are for two primary reasons. First, the war in Iran and the consequences of it on the price and availability of jet fuel. Second, shutting down its regional jet-operating CityLine in April. It is not just Lufthansa. The war means that many other airlines have suspended routes and slashed flights.
According to Lufthansa’s latest schedule submission to Cirium Diio, the
Star Alliance member plans an average of 454 daily departures from Frankfurt and Munich to destinations across Europe. Activity has fallen by 13% year-over-year, which is equivalent to 72 fewer daily takeoffs. This reflects suspended routes and lower frequencies elsewhere. Other months will be impacted in due course.
These Ten Routes Won’t Operate In May But Will Return In June
This article’s information is from examining
Lufthansa’s schedule via Cirium and cross-referencing it with what was recently provided by Aeroroutes. The German giant has suspended ten routes in May: eight from its
Munich hub, and two from its biggest hub of
Frankfurt. This reflects what is known as of May 4, and certainly may change.
In May, Lufthansa no longer operates from Munich to Basel, Geneva, Ljubljana, Rijeka, Stuttgart, Tivat, Trondheim, and Wrocław. All of these destinations are also flown from Frankfurt. Under the circumstances, it has decided to consolidate there. However, Basel and Geneva are served by Lufthansa’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Air Dolomiti, on its behalf. And having pulled out in 2025, fellow Lufthansa Group airline SWISS will operate between Geneva and Munich in May/June for its big brother.
Then there’s Frankfurt. Neither Cork nor Luxembourg are currently served by Lufthansa. The carrier is due to return to Ireland’s second most populus city on June 1 (twice-weekly A319). Luxembourg is different. While Lufthansa’s own jets are not currently deployed there, Air Dolomiti operates on its behalf (26 to 34 weekly E190/E195). This provides a good reminder to consider the wider picture.

Turkish Airlines Suspends Flights To 23 Cities Worldwide [Full List]
They include destinations in Europe and the Americas. See all the places here!
These Two Routes Won’t Operate In June
Currently, Lufthansa serves Frankfurt to Glasgow (twice-daily A319/A320/A321) and Skopje (daily to 10 weekly A319/A320/A321). However, the routes will be paused in June. As neither destination city is served from Munich, Glasgow and Skopje will temporarily not see Lufthansa at all.
The latest information, which is subject to adaption, indicates that the carrier’s final service to Glasgow and Skopje will be on May 31. The carrier is due to return on July 1. In the meantime, passengers may choose to fly from Frankfurt to Edinburgh (served three daily) instead of Glasgow, which is located about an hour away.
These 13 Routes Won’t Operate For This Summer At Least
Generally operating until May or June, Lufthansa has pulled all flights for at least the rest of the season from Frankfurt to Bordeaux, Brussels (Star partner Brussels Airlines will operate), Bydgoszcz, Heringsdorf, Katowice, Newcastle, Rzeszow, Stavanger, Stuttgart, and Vienna. Only two of the destinations (Bordeaux and Stuttgart) will be flown from Munich. As such, the other cities will be unserved by Lufthansa.
Things are not necessarily this simple. Despite Aeroroutes’ submission, several of the links that are typically served on a year-round basis are not currently scheduled or bookable in the upcoming winter season either. This includes Newcastle, to which Lufthansa has flown from Frankfurt since 2021. Of course, flights to these places might be loaded again in the future. The airline has been contacted for comment.
Three other routes have also been removed. They’re Munich to Brussels (partner Brussels Airlines will still operate), Gdańsk, and Sibiu. Services to Belgium are due to resume at the end of October. Flights to the Polish city were to resume in July and operate twice-daily on the CRJ900 through the summer, before switching to the A320 for the winter. However, all flights have been removed, at least for now. Gdańsk continues to have up to three daily services from Frankfurt. All flights to the Romanian city of Sibiu, which Lufthansa has served from Munich for 19 years, have been removed.
