Louis Vuitton’s Futuristic Hybrid Shoe Takes Over the Cruise Runway

Louis Vuitton‘s women’s creative director of 12 years Nicolas Ghesquière presented his latest cruise show for the French luxury brand at The Frick Collection in New York City on Wednesday, following Gucci and Dior resort shows, which also took place in the U.S. in recent days.

Inspired by the work of Keith Haring and showcasing a collaboration with the late Pop Art artist, the lineup featured bright colors and modern flair. Looks ranged from jeans and a cardigan paired together to colorful avant-garde dresses — but one thing remained consistent throughout, and it was the futuristic shoe style worn by all the models. The unique hybrid design, toeing the line between a sneaker and a boot, showed up in multiple iterations on the runway — as a flat, with a block heel, with ruffles and with Haring’s recognizable designs splashed across it.

As WWD reported in a review of the show, the shoes “were composed of individually piped strips of leather sewn together, a cross between a boxing shoe and something right out of ‘Star Trek.’”

Many of the shoes were metallic, with some a solid hue and others using colorblocking. The strips of leather were often curved and arranged in sections which directionally contrasted one another for a striking linear effect. Some of the sneaker-boots featured laces, others went without. The plethora of colorways ranged from black to silver to hot pink to a striking ruby red to multicolored floral patterns that matched the looks they accompanied. One of the Keith Haring options featured his iconic dancing figures in yellow with his signature black outline.

Last year’s Louis Vuitton cruise show — which brought together the Middle Ages and glam rock — featured fascinating shoes as well, but with more variety in terms of silhouette. The runway featured flats with cutouts, a range of boots including bejeweled open-toe styles with mirror embellishments and more designs.
