Looking back at Lamar Jackson’s Heisman season, 10 years later

Ten years ago, Lamar Jackson took a leap over a defender and into the national spotlight. His hurdling of Cordell Hudson on a Friday night at Syracuse ultimately became Jackson’s Heisman Trophy moment. The Louisville quarterback landed on his feet and scored, but he had no idea his highlight-reel play would become a viral sensation. Now, the play is memorialized inside the Cardinals’ football facility: A mannequin with a No. 8 Jackson jersey is posed midair for everyone to see.

“I looked at it like another play,” Jackson told ESPN. “I really didn’t think too much of it.

“I just made something happen, made something out of nothing.”

Jackson also mentioned — for the first time — that he had leg cramps on the play. His teammates might have been impressed, but they were not surprised.

“He just was a different type of dude,” then-Louisville wide receiver Traveon Samuel said. “When he got the ball in his hands, he just could do some amazing things. His very first scrimmage, he went live and he put his foot in the ground, and he made one of my teammates re-tear his ACL. From that point forward, he never went live again.”

Jackson opened the 2016 season with a school-record eight total touchdowns and 405 total yards at home in a 70-14 rout of Charlotte. But the following week on Sept. 9 at Syracuse — playing on national television with the college football world watching — Jackson entered the national conversation. As Louisville prepares to play at Syracuse this Saturday, ESPN spoke to players and coaches who were on the field and an announcer who was in the broadcast booth for their view of the leap 10 years later. (Hudson could not be reached for comment.)

Louisville had first-and-goal at Syracuse’s 9-yard line with 3:33 to go before halftime, up 28-7.

Louisville center Tobijah Hughley: I remember calling a three-by-one inside zone read play with the quarterback option to pull. Most of the time when you have a prolific athlete like that, he’s probably going to pull it [and run]. We were zone blocking up front. My defender broke off the block and started running the opposite direction. I said, “OK, Lamar pulled it.” I let him go so I didn’t get a hold. Thank God I didn’t, because that would’ve negated a great play.

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson: I was having cramps in my legs that drive. The end crashed a little bit, and I felt like I could beat him around the edge to get to the end zone and make something happen. Jamari Staples was blocking for me, and I don’t know if he missed the block, but the cornerback was free.

Louisville WR Jamari Staples: That is my guy he jumped over. I thought Lamar would hand the ball off. By the time I ran my guy into the end zone, we both looked back at the same time. I had not laid a hand on the guy. Sure enough, he pulled it, and I see him running. Mr. Jackson took flight and jumped straight over the dude. And all I could think in my head was, “Oh my God.”

Jackson: I tried to give him a little move, but my legs were like “nah.” [So] I just went up, I jumped, the guy whiffed and missed — and that was history.

Hughley: It was like a slo-mo moment. You’re like, “OK, this is a good play, maybe a gain of 5 or 6.” But it was almost like he was stepping up on a ladder and just kept on rising vertically over this guy. To land that and finish the play in the end zone, it’s something truly special.

Louisville WR Traveon Samuel: I was blocking, and I actually let my block go a little bit right when Lamar passed me. If you watch the full video, as he’s leaping over the defender, I’m in the background jumping with him. I don’t know if it was my natural instincts or my reaction seeing him jump.

Louisville RB Brandon Radcliff: I was on the sideline, and right when I was turning around, I just see Lamar’s head and shoulders go over somebody. He’s coming to the sideline with his hands up. I’m like, “Did he just hurdle somebody?” When I looked back up at the screen, they showed the replay and this man literally jumped over somebody. I’m like, ain’t no way. He just made it look so nonchalant.

Staples: It got quiet in the [Carrier] Dome. Most people, when they jump over somebody, it’s not with both of their feet. Both of his feet went over this guy. He didn’t do a cheerleader jump. I’m 6-2, 6-3 with cleats. He was at my height.

Louisville assistant Lonnie Galloway: It was like he was running the 400-meter hurdles. It was amazing. And there wasn’t a lot of space, either. He broke out, bounced out, and then just said, “OK, I don’t have anywhere else to go. I’m just going to jump over top of him.”

Mack Brown, ESPN commentator at the time: The way I remember it, the DB ducked his head and lunged and you just can’t do that. It’s very poor tackling. He’s got to keep his head up. He ducked, and it let Lamar go jump over him. They can’t jump over you if you keep your head up and keep your eyes on his belt.

Syracuse coach Dino Babers: I just felt like he did it on all of us. Mainly me. I was not happy about it at all. So, I let some of my coaches know I was not happy. I was embarrassed. I’ve been involved in college football for 47 years and I’ve only seen it happen twice.

Brown: It was a Heisman moment. It was a wow moment. It was a moment that you remember 10 years later. I remember I was sitting there with Adam Amin. We looked at each other and could have gotten in trouble because we could have cussed or something at that moment because it was that overwhelming. Everybody in the stadium said, “Well, this game’s over.”

Babers: All I know is Lamar was God.

Jackson: If you play the whole video, you can see I’ve got like a slight limp because of the cramps. I’m going to the sideline to go sit down and drink some water to rehydrate because I literally could not move.

Brown: It was so early and everybody’s wondering whether he could be a quarterback and what would [Louisville coach Bobby] Petrino do with him. I left that game saying, “Wow, he may be the best player in the country.”

Staples: When he does that, it’s just like, ‘What can this man not do?” We’ve seen him make completion after completion. We’ve seen him running with the ball, making the cuts. We’ve seen him do everything. Now, we watch you jump over somebody. It was wild.

Jackson: That play put people on notice, I believe.

Jackson finished the Syracuse game with 610 total yards — the most by a player in a game in ACC history — and five total touchdowns. If the Lamar Leap became his signature moment, his coaches and teammates point to his performance in a 63-20 home win over then-No. 2 Florida State the following week as his best game. Jackson registered 362 total yards against the Seminoles and five touchdowns, with four coming on the ground, including a 47-yard run that featured a highlight-worthy spin move early in the fourth quarter.

Samuel: It was a read option. The defense took me. They should have taken the quarterback. So, he took the ball, and if you go watch that play, I’m running my fake, and I’m looking at their sideline. I haven’t even looked back at Lamar running the ball. I just hear the crowd, and I’m pointing to the end zone. I knew he was scoring a touchdown.

Staples: That one, to me, is the Heisman play. We’re running down the field, and I see him coming out of the corner of my eye. There’s a guy that’s coming from his right side. I’m on his left. Lamar is breaking the tackle from the guy on the right, but I see him look at the guy on the left, and that’s when he spins. I have a picture. You can see my face, and I’m like, “Ohhhh.” Because I literally watched Lamar lock eyes with that guy and then make that spin move. That was probably the dopest moment of my college career. The fans were going crazy when he did that. I don’t think I ever heard Cardinal Stadium get that loud.

Hughley: We had full confidence that we were going to put it to Florida State, which is what we did. I remember “College GameDay” being there, and the hype around the program was at an all-time high. They had our number in previous years, so we wanted to make that right.

Staples: From that point on, [Jackson] just kept progressing. His game didn’t slow down. He got better at everything — running the ball, throwing the ball, his pocket presence, stepping up in the pocket and making the throws.

That is exactly what Jackson did as the season wore on, winning the Heisman Trophy to become the youngest recipient of the award at 19 years, 337 days. He tallied 51 total touchdowns during that 2016 campaign, still a school and ACC record. Including Louisville’s bowl game, he logged 5,114 yards of total offense.

Jackson: I was just thinking about winning the natty, bringing it back to Louisville. Even though we didn’t win the natty, we ended up accomplishing something.

Babers: The next year, it’s media day and I walk right up to Lamar and I don’t say a word to him. I touched him, and he looked at me like, “Coach what are you doing?” I said, “I just wanted to let my team know that you’re real and we can touch you.”

Jackson: Ten years later, for it still to be going viral on social media and stuff like that, it’s crazy. It feels like it happened yesterday.
