Whether French language protections are one of the things that killed a prospective U.S.-Canada trade deal depends on who you ask—but the dispute is handing the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française fresh momentum in its push for cultural funding.

The French culture advocacy group, represented by Miryana Dagher of PAA Conseils | Advisory, is lobbying Ottawa on legislative changes and supports to broaden access to French programming throughout the country, including for French-speaking minority communities.

This comes amid a renewed interest in the French language in Canada, prompted by Prime Minister Carney listing its rules and protections as one of the factors that led to an impasse on trade talks with the U.S.

The Trump administration has denied the U.S attempted to weaken the language as part of the negotiations, but this has nonetheless prompted a wave of patriotism well outside of Québec.

Downloads of Mauril, CBC/Radio-Canada’s French and English language-learning app surged following the breakdown in talks.

Also of note on this week’s lobbying registry is the agriculture sector, with companies like Aliya’s Foods Limited, a food manufacturing company, meeting with government officials to talk about how trade diversification efforts could help uplift smaller Canadian businesses.
