Live Updates: Vance Pays Tribute at Lindsey Graham’s Washington Funeral

The tributes to Senator Lindsey Graham, who died this month, will last for two days across Washington and his home state, South Carolina.

Dozens of dignitaries, including President Trump and South Carolina leaders, are gathering to honor Mr. Graham’s political and policy legacy.

Here’s what’s happening:

Tuesday morning: A ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda

In a sign of Mr. Graham’s stature in the Senate, services began at 10 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. Chaplains of the House and Senate offered prayers, and political leaders laid wreathes at his hearse. Senators from both parties attended.

Representative Sheri Biggs, a Republican who represents Mr. Graham’s home in South Carolina, said that the senator “spent his life standing for something larger than himself.”

Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the majority leader, offered an emotional tribute to his close friend, choking up as he concluded, “I look forward to the days when you make us all laugh again.”

Vice President JD Vance, who once served with Mr. Graham in the Senate, closed the public remarks, praising Mr. Graham’s legislative passion and willingness to cut deals no matter how heated arguments may have gotten.

Tuesday, 2 p.m.: President Trump speaks at a cathedral service

A memorial service will take place later Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral. Some of Mr. Graham’s staff members will be among those who serve as honorary pallbearers.

President Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine are among those set to attend, along with other congressional and South Carolina leaders.

Mr. Trump will deliver a tribute at the service, along with Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, and Emillie Boggs Roberts, Mr. Graham’s niece.

Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council; Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America; and the Rev. Franklin Graham, the evangelical minister, will also deliver readings.

Wednesday: A return home to South Carolina

Mr. Graham’s casket will return to South Carolina on Wednesday. At 10:45 a.m., the procession will stop at the State House, where Mr. Graham once served.

There will be a presentation by law enforcement, and a flyover from McEntire Joint National Guard Base at about 11 a.m.

At noon, a service will be held at First Baptist Church of Columbia. Gov. Henry McMaster and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette are among those expected to attend.

The tributes will conclude in Pickens County, where Mr. Graham’s family will bury him in a private ceremony.
