Lewis: “Buyer’s remorse” for Carney as NDP prepares for comeback in Toronto byelection

TORONTO – In a packed room of more than 300 supporters, NDP Candidate Shannon Devine joined Leader Avi Lewis and local endorsers last night to officially launch her campaign for the federal byelection in Beaches–East York.

“This byelection is an incredible opportunity for our neighbours to vote for change,” said Shannon Devine. “I’ve spoken with voters of all ages who are worried about the cost of living, housing, and the future of our waterfront. And they are worried that Mark Carney is turning his back on the issues that really matter. I’m running to stand up for our community and deliver the change people are looking for.”

The campaign launch took place at Hope United Church, following a community canvass with Lewis and Devine.

“As we knock on doors and talk to people in Beaches—East York, it’s clear that something is happening under the surface, and it goes far beyond this riding. The buyer’s remorse for Mark Carney has already started,” said Avi Lewis.

“Our folks are coming home, and we are getting a flood of new people who are interested in what New Democrats are offering because we have concrete solutions to the crises they see all around them. We are here in these byelections to send out a message to the Carney Liberals so loud that it pierces the political bubble in Ottawa: the NDP has not gone away,” Lewis added.

At the campaign launch, Devine was also endorsed by Lily Chang, Secretary-Treasurer for the Canadian Labour Congress, and Janet Davis, former City Councillor for Beaches—East York.

“At a time when workers’ fundamental rights are under attack and families are struggling, we deserve a leader who will stand with us,” said Lily Chang. “Shannon knows the labour movement through and through. She understands that working people are the ones who keep this country moving, and she will carry the voices of working people into every room where decisions are made.”

“When we elect New Democrats, we win important supports for people, like pensions, pharmacare, dental care, child care and stronger labour protection,” added Janet Davis. “I’m proud to endorse Shannon, and I’m looking forward to the energy and integrity she will bring as our future MP.”
