Krol Ko Temple, Angkor

Towards the end of our stay in Angkor, our driver stopped the car by a narrow dirt road leading into the forest. He told us there was “a small temple a few hundred yards away. Very quiet. No tourists”… We’d come to rely on his advice. Went down the dirt road. Above: reconstructed lintel. Probably a representation of Lokeshvara, a Boddhisatva associated with healing powers.

Mr. Choom was right. Not a soul in sight. Until we heard chanting. Inside a small dilapidated temple at the back…

a small congregation was praying and chanting inside. This was in February, Makha Bucha Day, celebrating the day when 1200 enlightened monks got together to listen to Buddha’s teachings.

On the walls of the temple…

…there were devatas listening to the prayers inside. I began to film. I seldom use my phone for videos. (‘need practice…)

As in Ta Prom, trees have grown on the ruins.

Krol Ko was built at the end of the 12th century, at the same time as the Bayon. Bayon is another post coming up.

The temple may have been a chapel linked to a nearby (gone) hospital.

Another reconstructed lintel. Meanwhile the chants went on and on. Wonderful.

Fragments pushed up by a tree. I must confess, if the site won’t use that piece I can take it…

Closing statement. I shall now ask the court to show leniency. The following movie is clearly an amateur job. (I’ll work on using the phone for video.) But it should convey some idea of the atmosphere… Om Mani Padme Hum.
