For spring 2027, Satoshi Kondo reinvented what a modern wardrobe could look like, playing on volumes and sumptuous colors. He and his team titled the collection “Figure of Ma.”
“Ma is this Japanese idea of the space in between,” Kondo explained. “We are further exploring again the concept of ma. I’ve always been interested in the aesthetic, the joy or the beauty that you can find in ma.”
So clothes-making itself wasn’t the springboard. Instead, Kondo and the Issey Miyake design team played with a 10-by-10-meter lightweight fabric, wafting it through the air, to see how it reacted and felt on the skin, prior to starting the creative clothes-crafting process.
“It’s the ma in its purest form,” Kondo said, adding the fabric was almost alive and breathing, with its own identity. “That play really serves as the source of this collection.”
There was an overarching airiness to the lineup full of voluminous silhouettes fashioned with fine — sometimes almost transparent — yarns allowing for the clothes’ translucency.
These came in a range of colors, both sheer and opaque, from azure to raspberry, lemon yellow and pink, mixed to lush effect.
Styles varied, too, but all had an Issey Miyake signature. Three-D scanned molds of torsos, created with Wacoal Corp., became sculptural tops. A ballooning series made with ripstop fabric produced bulbous shapes billowing from jackets and skirts. Some garments were made of horizontal pleats, causing fabric to bounce — almost dance — with movement.
“We are really challenging ourselves to make a new aesthetic and new clothing,” Kondo said. That was accomplished.
