Summary: My fiancé, his back injuries, our dog, and I finally said goodbye to our old mattress and leveled up our bedroom with the Natural Escape Organic Mattress from My Green Mattress. Not only is it recognized as one of the top organic mattresses in the industry and made from safe, natural materials, it also taught me the power of good, supportive sleep.
What I Love:
- The Natural Escape Organic Mattress has earned the top organic certifications in the mattress industry, including GOTS and GOLS Certified Organic, GreenGuard Gold Certified, and MadeSafe® Certified.
- The quilted cover is made from organic cotton and wool, making it naturally temperature-regulating, flame-retardant, and super cozy.
- The medium-firm support helps me feel like I’m floating on a cloud without compromising the steady support my fiancé needs for his back injuries.
Things To Note:
- At just under $2,000 for a queen size, this is a premium price point for a mattress, though in line with other organic options. The Natural Escape does come with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty!
Like many burgeoning 30-year-olds, I’ve become increasingly aware of how important a good mattress is. This was not always the case. I began, quite unceremoniously, with a hand-me-down queen mattress and a box spring shoved in the corner of my college bedroom. An Urban Outfitters tapestry acted as a headboard, nary a bedframe or a care in sight.
After a few years, I invited my rescue pit bull, Sweet Dee, into the mix, and later my boyfriend, Steven. The three of us hauled my sad little mattress from my small college town down to New Orleans, where any bed was sufficient after a night out in the French Quarter.
“Our Mattress Firm has taken us as far as it can go, and it is time to for one of the most avoided adult moments: Buying a new mattress.”
As our little family grew tighter (and older), we made various attempts to act like adults and get a better mattress. There were gifts from friends leaving the city, nightmarish Craigslist finds, and finally, one ultra-budget Mattress Firm selection that cut deep into our service-industry pockets but made us so proud. Now, eight years later and newly engaged, our Mattress Firm has taken us as far as it can go, and it is time to for one of the most avoided adult moments: Buying a new mattress.
Up until this point, I had never given a thought to whether my mattress was organic. Like most young adults, I chose based on price. But when I thought about how much of my life I was spending in bed (one-third of my life?!) it started to make more sense.
Then my editor approached me to test and review the Natural Escape Organic Mattress from My Green Mattress. Having tested it, I’m both elated and resigned, because now I know all other mattresses have been effectively ruined for me. I never fully understood the power of a quality mattress before trying the Natural Escape, and I can wholeheartedly say I’m never going back.
About My Green Mattress
As it turns out, My Green Mattress was born from a similarly personal mattress conundrum. Founder Tim Masters had been working in the mattress industry for years when his infant daughter, Emily, began struggling with eczema and environmental allergies. Unable to find a crib mattress he felt good about bringing home, he decided to make one himself using organic materials. That first mattress eventually became the Emily Organic Crib Mattress, and in 2007, Masters and his wife, Cindy, launched My Green Mattress.
“Unable to find a crib mattress he felt good about bringing home, he decided to make one himself using organic materials.”
Nearly 20 years later, all their mattresses are still made to order in their Illinois factory, using all organic cotton, wool, and latex. And most importantly, it has third-party certifications to back up the “green” language. My Green Mattress is GOTS and GOLS certified, and its mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL and MADE SAFE® Certified.

Setup and first impressions
The Natural Escape Organic Mattress arrived quickly, about 10 days after the order was placed. It was left on my front porch in its simple cardboard box, a little beat up from the journey, but nothing out of place.
My fiancé was able to move it easily inside by himself, though the box was still pretty heavy. (Keep that in mind in case you live in a walk up — you might want a second pair of hands!)

We schlepped the box back to our bedroom, where we cut it open and began the slow unraveling process. The mattress is rolled into a Swiss Roll configuration and tightly wrapped in plastic, making it pretty easy to unbox. Once the shrink wrap was broken, you could hear the inflation process begin.
I found the little fabric handles on the sides of the mattress particularly helpful. They’re flat and don’t protrude, but they made those final back-and-forth adjustments to get the mattress in the right place much easier.

After setting up, we broke for a leisurely lunch to let the mattress do its thing. It’s recommended to give it a full 24 hours to inflate, but we found it was most of the way there after about 8 hours.
There was also no off-gassing, since everything here is organic. There was no weird smell, no vapors, nothing. And as for the comfort? Even when casually lazing on the bed with my dog to take the setup photos for this story, I could tell…this was way different than any other mattress we’d had.

Is the My Green Mattress Natural Escape comfortable?
The first thing I noticed about the Natural Escape was the amount of support I felt. I didn’t dramatically sink into a cloud of pillowy foam. Instead, the mattress felt buoyant, but also incredibly supportive. It was soft enough to cushion my shoulders and hips, yet firm enough that I never felt swallowed by it. Perhaps the best compliment I could give it: I almost forgot it was even there.
“It was soft enough to cushion my shoulders and hips, yet firm enough that I never felt swallowed by it.”
This makes sense when we look inside the mattress. The Natural Escape is a latex hybrid with three inches of organic Dunlop latex layered over nearly 1,500 individually pocketed coils. These coils are zoned to provide extra support in the lumbar area while allowing more give around pressure points like the shoulders and hips. Side-sleepers rejoice! Perhaps of note, though, these coils do make the center of the bed significantly heavier than the corners, but that’s largely unnoticeable save for when you’re making the bed.

The natural latex in the mattress is also naturally responsive, so rather than slowly molding around your body like memory foam, it springs back against you. We particularly appreciated this, having just fallen victim to an inexpensive Amazon foam mattress that would leave craters from our previous sleeping positions whenever we moved.
All this to say, if you are more of a pillow-top fan, this may not be the choice for you. My Green Mattress rates the firmness between a 7.5 and 8 out of 10, putting it decidedly in the medium-firm camp. It also may be worth noting that motion isolation isn’t the Natural Escape’s strongest suit. If you share a bed with another person (or, in my case, another person and a 60-pound pit bull), you may notice some movement when your bedmates reposition themselves during the night.
Is it worth it?
While it might be hard to imagine myself dropping $2,000 on a new mattress, I fully believe the Natural Escape is worth it if it’s in your price range. I’m regularly falling asleep faster, staying asleep longer, and waking up feeling refreshed rather than tired. I’ve even been waking up before my alarm. I’d even argue it’s worth the save-up and splurge. If you’re interested but a little intimidated by the price, there’s also financing available.

A few quick things that may ease the sticker shock: The Natural Escape does come with a 20-year warranty, so if something goes wrong, you’re covered. They also offer a 365-night sleep trial, giving you time to really decide if the investment is worth it for you. Also fabulous: Returns from its 365-night sleep trial are donated whenever possible to local charities, shelters, and families rather than simply being sent to a landfill.

All in all, the Natural Escape feels like a great choice for anyone looking for their first true, intentional mattress. It feels good knowing that, after years of hand-me-downs and whatever-we-could-afford, we finally have a bed that feels like ours.
