Summary: Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm is the gold medal standard for sleeping like you’re in a luxury hotel. The brand has patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and a responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel, so it’s super supportive and won’t sag. It helped with my lower back pain, and since I insist on a nontoxic mattress for my family, Saatva’s GREENGUARD Gold certification means this mattress ticked all the boxes.
What I love:
- From day one of sleeping on my Luxury Firm Saatva Classic Mattress with patented support technology, I woke up with better spinal alignment and no more lower back pain.
- Their 3-inch Euro pillow top comes standard in three comfort levels (plush soft, luxury firm, and firm) and contours to every body type, relieving pressure points and helping my circulation.
- Saatva offers 12 mattress options (including memory foam, organic latex hybrid innerspring, an RX version for chronic back pain and joint aches, and the Saatva HD for bigger bodies).
- An organic cotton cover and dual-coil design for maximum breathability make for a nontoxic, temperature-controlled night’s sleep.
- Saatva offers a 365-day sleep trial and an unprecedented lifetime warranty program.
Things to keep in mind:
- It’s not a mattress in a box, so if you live in a tight space where it’s hard to get a full-size mattress up the stairs or around the corner, it could be a problem. (I’m not a fan of box mattresses, so this was a plus for me!)
- Depending on the model you select, Saatva offers some more luxurious and more expensive options than its competitors.
When I started shopping for a new mattress, support and comfort were at the top of my list. I’m a side sleeper with lower back issues who is tired of waking up creaky (and therefore cranky), so it meant a lot to me that the American Chiropractic Association endorses Saatva’s patented Lumbar Zone® Technology. I’m currently seeing a chiropractor three times a week to help my body recover from long-held stress and trauma. If I’m going to make an investment like that in my health, then I don’t want to undo those efforts every night by sleeping on a mediocre mattress with minimal support.

Nontoxic materials are another biggie in my world. In 2019, my youngest son was diagnosed with lymphoma caused by environmental toxins. In the aftermath of his treatment and healing, I absolutely refuse to let anyone in my family breathe fiberglass and chemical flame retardants for eight hours every night. Lucky for me, every Saatva mattress features an organic cotton cover, a Guardin™ botanical antimicrobial treatment, CertiPUR-US certified foams, recycled steel coils, and a flame retardant barrier made from natural thistle pulp. Their GREENGUARD Gold certification also eases my mind about exposure to volatile organic compounds or VOCs, since it ensures no harmful chemical emissions come from our mattress.
With all that in mind, it was easy to say yes to reviewing Saatva’s Classic Mattress.
About Saatva
Founded in 2010, Saatva is the original direct-to-consumer mattress purveyor, turning the industry upside down with handcrafted, eco-friendly, luxury mattresses at accessible prices. Today, Saatva is the #1 online retailer of luxury mattresses in the U.S., with a whopping six appearances on the Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America list. The Better Business Bureau gave them an A+, and so does the public: 95% of Saatva customers say they sleep better on their Saatva than on any previous mattress. They’re basically like the Simone Biles of the mattress world.

Let’s unpack some of the highlights that make Saatva so choice: A standard Plush 3’” Euro pillow top in a breathable, hypoallergenic cover made from organic cotton; recycled carbon-steel coils dual-designed for maximum airflow; patented Lumbar Zone Technology for extra support in the center third of the mattress where you need it the most (hello, lower back); and a plant-based thistle pulp flame barrier (instead of chemical flame retardants). They also design their mattresses with high-density foam rails for stable edge support and a base coil unit of 13-gauge tempered steel to prevent sagging over time.
In addition to their high-quality sustainable materials, I’m a big fan of how highly they value sustainable practices. For instance, they’ve built a nationwide network of factories so that a mattress, once ordered, is made on-site in the U.S. (not stored in a warehouse, which would increase the carbon footprint) and then travels less than 100 miles on average from the factory to your home. Their factories also partner with recycling companies to recycle all wood, plastic, and foam scraps.

As a former public high school educator, I also love that Saatva partners with PENCIL, a New York-based educational nonprofit that connects business professionals with students through mentoring programs spanning product design, marketing and finance. They also partner with Evertreen, planting over 2,000 trees to date and offsetting more than 675,000 kg of CO2; and if that’s not enough to prove their altruism, check out their work with the nonprofit Austin Pathways to provide mattresses and bedding to newly housed people throughout the city of Austin.
My experience with Saatva’s Classic Mattress
Let’s start with how I decided on the Classic, Luxury Firm option. Saatva offers 12 different mattresses, so their “find the right mattress quiz” is essential. I needed them to narrow things down; otherwise, I can freeze in the face of too many choices (anyone else?). Their quiz is the perfect customizable sorting hat, divided into categories of mattress type, firmness, or sleep position, and it educates and empowers anyone looking for better sleep.
“Saatva offers 12 different mattresses — so their ‘find the right mattress quiz’ and drop-down menu comparing three mattresses at a time is essential.”
In the end, I ordered the Classic Queen Luxury Firm in 11.5 inches (as opposed to the 14.5-inch height, which makes it harder to find sheets that fit).
Delivery and setup
Saatva offers complimentary white-glove delivery and setup, which meant that on the day of arrival, three wonderful humans pulled up in a Penske delivery truck, walked my new mattress into my home, and propped it against my wall. All I had to do was cut away the protective plastic bag and plop my mattress onto my bed frame (they can also be the mattress ploppers if you want that).

I laid down on my new bare mattress and immediately noticed that, well, there was nothing to notice — no smell, no stiffness. Lying on my new mattress, I felt gently held and supported, kind of like when someone puts a comforting hand on your lower back—reassurance without pressure.

Sleeping on my Saatva
I’ve been sleeping on my mattress for three weeks now, and my lower back pain is gone. It feels miraculous, but I guess that’s what happens when you actually have lumbar support.

Recently, a girlfriend of mine visited and shared my bed. The next morning she told me I am like a sleeping stick — she’s never slept next to someone so still. I mean, why move when you’re already perfectly comfortable, ya know? I chalk it up to the supportive firmness of my choice and the improved temperature control over my previous mattress.
I tend to sleep hot, but not on my Saatva. The mix of natural fabrics and airflow-promoting coils that disperse body heat works wonders together. As for firmness, they offer Plush Soft and Firm, but I wanted their most popular comfort level: the Goldilocks in-between of not too soft and not too hard. With the Luxury Firm, I am sleeping through the night without waking up to shift positions.

Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky. And because I am getting better sleep, I am showing up more fully for my life — is there anything more one could ask from a product than to help life be a little less lifey and a little more doable? I call that a win.
Is Saatva worth it?
If you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life — I’d highly recommend Saatva’s Classic in the Luxury Firm. If you want a super squishy mattress or something super firm, you’ll want to choose a different firmness and perhaps a different mattress altogether. For bigger bodies, I recommend the Saatva HD, a hybrid innerspring option that offers even more support.

Saatva offers a 365-day trial period— that’s right, an entire YEAR to decide if this is the right mattress. They also have an unprecedented warranty program called “Friends for Life,” which guarantees mattress replacement at no charge for the first 2 years of ownership. After that, for as long as you own the mattress, any repairs or re-covers cost a $149 processing fee. That’s IT. There’s also a Fairness Replacement Option if your mattress is considered defective. I’ve never seen anything like it. It basically means if I am committed to Saatva, they are committed to me for the rest of my life. The total mattress cost of $2,229 seems worth it when I spread it out over a lifetime of comfortable nights.
Saatva’s quiz and comparison tools are a great place to start understanding what’s the best fit for you. For me, I’ve found the mattress of my dreams. I give it a gold.
