Is Mexico out of the World Cup? El Tri lose to England in last 16

Mexico’s World Cup dream has come to an end

England outlasted Mexico3-2 in a chaotic World Cup round of 16 match on Sunday, July 5 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The Three Lions took a 2-1 lead into halftime after Jude Bellingham’s first-half brace, which was followed by a Julián Quiñones goal just before the break.

England’s task was made much tougher when defender Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card early in the second half.

But Harry Kane would strike back with a penalty kick to make it 3-1 for 10-man England after Raúl Rangel fouled Anthony Gordon in the box.

Raúl Jiménez made it 3-2 with a penalty of his own, but Mexico could not find the equalizer.

The defeat meant that Mexico’s World Cup ended after El Tri began the tournament with four straight wins.

El Tri beat South Africa, South Korea and Czechia in the group phase, then got past Ecuador in the round of 32. Javier Aguirre’s side didn’t concede a single goal in any of those games.

But that all changed on Sunday as a rampant England side led by Bellingham and Kane breached Mexico’s back line three times.

For Mexico, it was a bitter ending to a World Cup on home soil that started out with major promise.

Mexico reached the quarterfinals as host in 1970 and 1986, but fell short of the last eight this time around. However, with an expanded World Cup this year meaning one additional knockout stage, Mexico surpassed the number of wins it had in 1970 (two) and 1986 (three).
