NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer showed off his athletic prowess on the boundary that has already sparked “catch of the season” debates during the IPL 2026 clash between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
The moment came in the 18th over when Hardik Pandya tried to accelerate. Facing Marco Jansen, Hardik went for a big shot but failed to middle it, sending the ball high towards long-on. What followed was pure athletic brilliance.
Running swiftly to his left, Iyer tracked the ball perfectly near the boundary rope. Realising he was about to lose balance and step over, he improvised mid-air, grabbing the ball with a reverse cup and, while airborne, tossing it back into play.
Xavier Bartlett, positioned nearby, completed the catch safely. While Bartlett’s name went into the scorebook, the effort was entirely Iyer’s creation.

The reaction said it all. The Mumbai dugout, including Rohit Sharma, was left stunned, while Iyer himself gestured to the crowd, urging them to acknowledge the moment.
The wicket proved crucial. Hardik’s dismissal for 14 halted Mumbai’s late surge just when they were looking to push beyond 200.
Despite that setback, MI still posted a strong 195/6, thanks largely to a sensational unbeaten 112 from Quinton de Kock and a brisk 50 from Naman Dhir.
Yet, even in an innings filled with big runs, it was Iyer’s moment on the ropes that stole the spotlight. In a format where boundaries are frequent and margins are thin, such fielding brilliance can shift momentum instantly.
Whether it ends up as the best catch of IPL 2026 remains to be seen; but for now, Shreyas Iyer has certainly set the benchmark.
