“Incompetent”: Lawmaker Blasts American Airlines Over Long Delay That Caused Missed Votes


A flight disruption that delayed passengers has once again put airline reliability in the spotlight, highlighting the operational pressure carriers face during one of the year’s busiest travel periods. The incident attracted widespread attention after Congressman Max Miller criticized American Airlines, publicly describing the carrier as “incompetent” over a delay that reportedly prevented him and two other members of Congress from reaching Washington in time for House votes.

While delayed flights are a familiar reality for passengers, disruptions become more visible when they involve public figures. They also draw attention to the wider challenges airlines face in maintaining operational reliability in a system where thousands of flights, crews, aircraft rotations, and airport slots are interconnected.

Operational Delays Can Quickly Spread Across Entire Networks

According to a report by Fox Business, Miller and two additional lawmakers were affected by a lengthy delay involving an American flight that reportedly remained on the ground for an extended period before returning to the gate. While passengers often see a delay as an isolated issue, airline operations rarely work that way.

Commercial aviation depends on tightly coordinated systems that connect aircraft, flight crews, maintenance schedules, gate assignments, and air traffic management, with many aircraft completing several flight sectors in a single day. Research examining airline scheduling and aircraft rotation systems has found that delay propagation across aircraft rotations is a major contributor to network-wide disruption, as delays affecting one flight can cascade into subsequent sectors operated by the same aircraft.

Simple Flying reached out to American for a comment, but a representative was not immediately available.

The incident occurred as the United States enters the July 4 holiday travel period, traditionally one of the busiest periods on the aviation calendar. According to projections from AAA Travel Forecast, approximately 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel during the holiday period, with around 5.85 million passengers choosing domestic air travel. Holiday periods routinely create sharp increases in passenger volume, placing greater pressure on airlines attempting to maintain schedule reliability across already tightly coordinated networks. Additional demand factors can also emerge through major global events, such as American Airlines’ role as an official partner of the FIFA World Cup.

Figures from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic by the Numbers show that the US air traffic system handles more than 44,000 flights and over three million airline passengers each day. During peak travel periods, that workload can increase significantly, reducing operational flexibility and making it more difficult for airlines and airports to absorb unexpected disruptions without wider schedule impacts.

Historical analysis of holiday travel trends also suggests that periods of elevated demand can increase operational disruption rates. An Upgraded Points analysis found that average delay rates during previous July Fourth travel periods increased to approximately 25.6%, compared with a normal operating average of around 20.8%. The findings highlight how concentrated passenger demand and network congestion can place additional stress on airline systems during major travel windows.

American remains one of the largest carriers in global aviation and holds the crown as the world’s largest by passenger number, with the airline and its regional partners operating approximately 6,700 flights per day and serving nearly 350 destinations across more than 50 countries. The network is built around major hubs including Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Miami International Airport (MIA), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), allowing the carrier to connect large domestic and international passenger flows through a highly integrated route system.

The scale of those operations becomes particularly visible during the summer travel season. American has said it expects to carry roughly 75 million passengers across approximately 750,000 flights during its summer schedule, while operating one of the world’s largest commercial fleets with more than 1,000 mainline aircraft supporting its network.

Performance data can also illustrate the challenge of maintaining reliability across a network of this size. Historical operational data analyzed by AirDelay indicates that American recorded an average on-time rate of approximately 77.1% between 2019 and 2025, with June and July seeing the worst on-time performance. While these figures broadly align with wider industry trends, they also demonstrate the operational pressures facing large network airlines, particularly during high-demand travel periods when passenger volumes and airport congestion increase. The figures also underline the broader theme surrounding the incident: that even the world’s largest airlines continue to face the challenge of balancing scale, operational efficiency, and schedule reliability in an increasingly demanding travel environment.
