A pilot decided to skywrite the words “I’m Bored” in the skies above Liverpool, United Kingdom, during a two-hour test flight. The aircraft, which had departed from Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL), had been in the air for two hours after engine maintenance required mandatory flight testing, which can typically last several hours.
Operated with a Piper Tomahawk, the flight departed from Liverpool on Saturday, July 11, at 11:25 AM, and during the flight, the pilot decided to get creative and traced the words “I’m Bored”. This follows a similar act above the skies of Adelaide, Australia, in 2019.
Skillful Flying By The Young Pilot
According to the Telegraph, the flight was operated by a pilot in his 20’s, who is a trained flying instructor. The plane, which is owned by Ravenair, had been assigned a pilot for the post-maintenance flight. The skilful act of tracing the words in the air likely had been influenced by the long flight, on his own, as it was a test flight.
The pilot renamed unnamed, however, the act of tracing the words was very skillful, and perhaps would have required some sort of planning. Concentration would have required the accurate spelling and direction of the plane to outline the words clearly as spotted on flight trackers. Operations Manager at Ravenair explained this to the BBC:
“He was a bit bored but he probably had to concentrate a lot in the end to spell out the words, so he was probably anything but.”
A Two-Hour Test Flight Above The Skies Of Liverpool
This marks the second time in several weeks where piltos have shown off their skills of skywriting, with the Liverpool act coming just after a pilot in the US state of Ohio took to the skies for six hours to outline the map of the contiguous United States. Additionally, the pilot etched the words ‘USA 250’, celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary of signing the Declaration of Independence.
Pilots writing phases or curating unique shapes in the sky is a regular act that is popular on flight tracking websites. The recent act by the Ravenair pilot has garnered the airline a hype of media attention as the phrase “I’m bored” was found.
As shared on X, the flight over the skies of Liverpool and West Kirby has seen over a quarter of a million views and has been bookmarked by hundreds. The flight, according to Flightradar24, departed at exactly 11:25 AM on Saturday and returned at 1:25 PM.
Airline And Aircraft Details: G-RVNA
Operated by a Piper Tomahawk, the two-seat, fixed tricycle gear aircraft is predominantly used for flight training, and is a single-engined low-wing cantilever monoplane which is powered by a Lycoming O-235 four-cylinder piston engine. To access the plane has two front-hinged doors that allow access to the relatively small cabin.
There were a total of 2,484 of these planes built between 1978 and 1982, and it has a maximum speed of around 126 miles (203 km) per hour, with a range of up to 539 miles (867 km) when flying at 10,500 feet. Further characteristics of the plane are noted in the table below:
Capacity | One crew, one passenger |
|---|---|

Wingspan | 34 feet (10.36 m) |
Fuel Capacity | 30 gallons (110 L) |

While the pilot’s act above the skies of Liverpool of tracing the words “I’m bored” was likely done as a light and humorous joke, it has now seen international media attention. This shows the pilot’s skill to be able to trace such words in the sky clearly, and has quickly been picked up by flight trackers and aviation enthusiasts around the world.
