How Much Do British Airways Pilots Make Compared To Emirates Pilots?

Pilot pay varies substantially between British Airways and Emirates, but the biggest difference is not simply the headline annual figure. British Airways uses a UK-based salary system built around basic pay, flying pay, and time-away-from-base payments, while Emirates advertises a tax-free package separating take-home cash from housing, education, medical coverage, travel benefits, and pension contributions. As a result, comparing only the largest advertised number can obscure what a pilot actually receives as cash income.

For a British Airways pilot, the current mainline pay scale published by Pilot Jobs Network lists annual basic salaries from £72,738 ($97,000) for a first-year short-haul First Officer to £165,965 ($221,000) for a long-haul Captain at the 20-year point. Emirates currently advertises annual take-home cash of AED 385,000 ($105,000) for a standard First Officer package and AED 575,000 ($155,000) for a direct-entry Captain, with enhanced First Officer (FO) pay available to pilots meeting additional experience requirements. The British Airways figures are before UK tax, while Emirates describes its advertised pilot salary as tax-free.

British Airways First Officer Pay

British Airways uses a seniority-based pay scale with separate short-haul and long-haul rates. The detailed scale effective from August 2025 lists a first-year First Officer basic salary of £72,738 ($97,000) on both fleets. By the seventh year, the figures rise to £84,572 ($113,000) for short haul and £88,513 ($118,000) for long haul. At the 20-year point, the listed basic salaries reach £110,218 ($147,000) and £124,474 ($165,000), respectively.

The published scale should not be read as the entire cash compensation picture. Pilot Jobs Network notes that the displayed scale is significantly out of date compared with current starting earnings, with a starting salary now closer to £79,000 ($105,000) plus allowances, and first-year First Officer pay after allowances above £100,000 ($133,000). The site’s detailed table remains useful for showing how the basic salary progresses, but the additional note indicates that actual current earnings can exceed the headline base rate.

British Airways also pays flying pay and time-away-from-base payments. The current information lists flying pay at approximately £19 ($25) per hour and time-away-from-base payments of up to £4.86 ($6.50) per hour. Annual flight pay is estimated at about £14,161 ($19,000), based on an average of 713 annual hours and including holiday pay.

Emirates First Officer Pay

Emirates presents its First Officer compensation differently. The airline’s official careers page currently lists a standard annual pay-and-benefits package of AED 900,000 ($245,000), but only AED 385,000 ($105,000) of that is annual take-home cash. Emirates says that cash figure represents annualized basic salary and flying pay based on 85 flying hours per month. The airline also offers an enhanced package for more experienced First Officers. The enhanced annual package is AED 935,000 ($255,000), while annual take-home cash rises to AED 415,000 ($115,000). To qualify, pilots must have at least 4,000 hours of total flying time on jets above 20 tonnes, including at least 2,000 hours on fixed-wing, multi-crew commercial jets above 50 tonnes, and must hold an English Language Proficiency level of 5 or higher.

The cash component increases from AED 385,000 ($105,000) to AED 415,000 ($115,000). Emirates lists monthly take-home cash of AED 32,100 ($8,750) under the standard package and AED 34,600 ($9,600) under the enhanced package. The remaining value comes through benefits rather than unrestricted salary. Emirates provides accommodation equivalent to AED 225,000 ($61,310), including utilities for a three- or four-bedroom villa, or an accommodation allowance if the pilot buys property. Education allowances are also available, with annual amounts of AED 52,250 ($14,237) for primary school and AED 79,750 ($21,730) for secondary school, for up to three children.

British Airways Captain Pay

The British Airways Captain scale shows a much wider range than the First Officer scale because seniority and fleet make a substantial difference. The first-year Captain’s basic salary is £96,983 ($129,000) on both short-haul and long-haul aircraft. At year seven, the listed basic salaries are £112,764 ($150,000) for short-haul and £118,770 ($158,000) for long-haul.

At the 20-year point, the basic salary rises to £146,953 ($195,000) for short-haul Captains and £165,965 ($221,000) for long-haul Captains. Pilot Jobs Network’s brief salary figures, which use a different scale, list top basic figures of £189,309 ($252,000) for short-haul and £223,326 ($297,000) for long-haul. Because the site identifies the detailed table as the applicable scale while separately noting differences in its brief figures, these should be treated as separate published measures rather than combined.

Captains also receive the same approximate flying-pay and time-away-from-base rates listed for British Airways pilots generally. The airline’s pension arrangement is another component of total compensation. New joiners have access to a British Airways Pension Plan with personal contributions of 6%, company contributions of 15%, and a smart pension credit of 0.6%, for total contributions of 21.6%. Unlike Emirates, however, British Airways pilots are paid within the UK tax system. The gross figures therefore cannot be treated as equivalent to the cash figures Emirates describes as take-home pay. A British Airways Captain’s actual disposable income will depend on UK taxation and individual circumstances.

Emirates Captain Pay

Emirates’ direct-entry Captain package has a simpler headline figure, although it also combines several forms of compensation. The airline currently advertises AED 1.185 million ($320,000) in annual pay and benefits, including take-home cash, schooling, medical and insurance coverage, annual leave tickets, housing, transport, and the employer contribution to its Provident Fund. The annual take-home cash component is AED 575,000 ($155,000), which Emirates describes as annualized basic salary and flying pay. That works out to approximately AED 48,000 ($13,000) per month based on 85 flying hours.

Housing is a major part of the package. Emirates also provides accommodation for Captains, but to a higher equivalent value of AED 290,000 ($80,000). Education allowances are available for eligible children, with the published annual amounts reaching AED 52,250 ($14,237) for primary school and AED 79,750 ($21,730) for secondary school, for up to three children. Additionally, the airline provides medical and dental coverage, life and accident insurance, and loss-of-license insurance. Its Provident Fund adds an employer contribution of 12% of its basic monthly salary, while employees contribute 5%. Emirates also lists 42 calendar days of annual leave and confirmed annual leave tickets.

The advertised AED 1.185 million ($320,000) is therefore not equivalent to AED 1.185 million ($320,000) in salary deposited into a pilot’s account. The AED 575,000 ($155,000) cash figure is the more direct salary comparison, while housing, education, insurance, and retirement contributions make up much of the remainder.

How The Two Pay Structures Compare

The most useful comparison is therefore to separate cash compensation from benefits. To review, for First Officers, British Airways’ published basic salary starts at £72,738 ($97,000), with current reporting on the same pay system indicating starting earnings closer to £79,000 ($105,000) plus allowances. Emirates lists AED 385,000 ($105,000) in annual cash for its standard First Officer package and AED 415,000 ($115,000) for the enhanced package.

Similarly, for Captains, British Airways’ detailed scale reaches £146,953 ($195,000) for short-haul and £165,965 ($221,000) for long-haul at the 20-year point, before tax and additional pay. Emirates lists AED 575,000 ($155,000) in annual take-home cash for direct-entry Captains. These figures are not directly interchangeable because the British Airways numbers are gross salary figures, while Emirates’ figure is explicitly described as take-home cash.

Benefits further complicate the comparison. British Airways offers pension contributions, staff travel, discounted holidays, annual leave, and additional flying-related payments. Emirates places more of its advertised package into housing, education, medical and insurance benefits, travel, and its Provident Fund. The career-entry requirements also differ. Emirates’ current First Officer position requires more than 2,000 total flying hours, current Boeing or Airbus fly-by-wire experience, and 150 hours on type within the previous 12 months. Its direct-entry Captain position requires more than 7,000 total flying hours, 150 hours on type in the previous 12 months, and an ICAO ATPL with an unrestricted Class 1 medical. British Airways’ published requirements vary by route and experience, with its current mainline information listing different minimums for short-haul and long-haul applicants.

Salary Is Only One Part Of The Equation

British Airways and Emirates offer two distinctly structured approaches to pilot compensation. British Airways emphasizes a UK salary scale that rises with seniority and differs between short- and long-haul operations, supplemented by flying pay, time-away-from-base payments, and pension contributions. Emirates publishes a larger total-benefits figure, but separates that headline package from the cash actually received.

For a First Officer, the comparison centers on whether the British Airways gross salary and additional allowances or the Emirates cash salary and tax-free benefits provide the more relevant measure for an individual pilot. For Captains, the gap between gross and take-home figures becomes even more significant, particularly when British Airways seniority-based pay is compared with Emirates’ direct-entry package.

The longer-term difference may matter as much as the starting figure. British Airways’ published scale provides a defined progression through 34 pay points, while Emirates differentiates its First Officer package according to experience and offers a separate direct-entry Captain pathway. Housing, education, pension arrangements, taxation, leave, and required flying hours can all materially change the value of each package. For pilots evaluating the two airlines, the headline salary is best treated as a starting point for comparison rather than the final measure of compensation.
