High-stakes Michigan Senate race among primaries in 5 states

Voters in Michigan are selecting which Democratic candidate will face a former congressman in a high-stakes race that could decide which party controls the Senate next year.

In the Democratic Senate primary, moderate Rep. Haley Stevens and progressive Dr. Abdul El-Sayed are running to face Republican Rep. Mike Rogers in November’s general election in an open seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.

There are also competitive races to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and in two U.S. House districts.

Michigan is one of five states holding primaries on Tuesday. Here’s a look at the others:

Missouri

In the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, former Rep. Cori Bush is running against Rep. Wesley Bell, who toppled her two years ago.

Republicans hope to flip the state’s 5th Congressional District with GOP candidates vying to take on incumbent Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver in a district that was skewed Republican-friendly when the state redrew its congressional map.
