EAST PROVIDENCE – Exactly how Providence Country Day or Bay View might match up against Cranston East will remain a mystery, but at least one question was answered Monday afternoon.

It will take a playoff meeting for anything to separate the Division III Knights and Bengals girls soccer squads. Injury Fund action couldn’t do it, and this draw in the rain on the Providence Country Day campus also wasn’t enough.

The elements would have been tricky enough to negotiate on the back end of this days-long storm. Add in a turf surface that played like lightning once it was wet and the conditions were too difficult for attackers to manage too many sharp chances. Providence Country Day keeper Iris Morkunas and Bay View keeper Taylor Pitney each kept a clean sheet while navigating a couple tense moments at each end.

The Knights (6-0-2) entered as winners of five straight and fresh off 36 goals in that span. The Bengals (5-1-1) held on at times but did enough to keep their city rivals away from goal. Giada Palano‘s sliding challenge late in the first half forced a deflected shot to loop over the crossbar and Pitney leaped just in time to stop a shot from distance in the second half that nearly bounced over her head and in.

Morkunas did her best work in the second half, particularly inside the final 10 minutes. Bay View earned a corner kick with the clock winding down and the ball was eventually played out to Kenzie Mooney about 30 yards from the left post. She cracked a right-footed drive that reached the cage on the fly, but Morkunas positioned herself perfectly to make a catch as the whistle sounded.

The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in late August and have since cruised through the regular season to date. The Bengals opened with a Division II loss against Burrillville but are unbeaten in six matches against their own table. Providence Country Day used a lone goal to beat Juanita Sanchez, 1-0, and was held to a scoreless draw by Davies before its recent sizzling streak.

The Thunderbolts entered the day a perfect 7-0-0 and don’t have either Bay View or the Knights on their schedule during the regular season. They could avoid both sides all the way to the title match at Rhode Island College – this currently would be a meeting of No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the bracket. Pawtucket, Johnston, Davies, Blackstone Valley Prep and West Warwick came into the week rounding out the top eight in the standings.

⚽GIRLS SOCCER – Division I

Chariho 3, Moses Brown 0

Eiley Simmons bagged the eventual winner and the Chargers added two goals just seconds apart to beat the Quakers, 3-0, in Division I.

Dylan Whitman set up the opener in the 53rd minute, dropping a pass for Simmons to force a deflected shot past the keeper. It stayed 1-0 until the 66th minute when Claire Short hit the top right corner to double the advantage. Maura Stelik put away a Morgan Brucker rebound just moments later as Chariho iced the result.

Savana Debont-Fitzgerald was forced to make just one save to earn the shutout, as the defense in front of her was strong from the Chargers (5-3-1). Marielle Nassiff made 10 saves for Moses Brown (1-5-0).

East Greenwich 5, Cranston West 1

Maeve Soden continued her strong start to the season as the Avengers eased past the Falcons, 5-1, in Division I.

Soden triggered the attack with two goals and an assist, as East Greenwich built a 3-0 halftime cushion and never looked back. Claudia Hollingsworth, Maeve Monaghan and Izzy MacMillan each added a goal, Elizabeth Low dished out two assists and Vivien Marano chipped in another helper for the Avengers (5-2-0).

Abigail Frias netted a late goal in the second half for Cranston West (0-8-0). Alexa Ramirez finished with five saves.

🏑FIELD HOCKEY – Division I

South Kingstown 2, Lincoln 1 (OT)

The Rebels rallied from an early deficit and edged the Lions in overtime in this Division I matchup. Lincoln struck first in the second quarter when Laura Bello finished a play set up by Molly Comtois with 9:40 remaining for a 1-0 lead.

South Kingstown answered in the third quarter as Lyndee Conley scored off an assist from Marah Nelson with 1:27 left in the frame to even the score. SK completed the comeback in overtime when Reva Patel netted the game-winner with 9:21 remaining, converting a feed from ChloeRoebuck.

Harper Rodman made seven saves for South Kingstown, while EmmalynAraujo stopped three shots for Lincoln. Both teams finished with four shots on goal.

🏑FIELD HOCKEY – Division II

Lincoln School 3, Cumberland 2, OT

Lincoln School’s Arianna Casey scored twice – the first at 10:49 of the fourth quarter which tied the game at 2-2 and second sent the game into overtime, and the second tally which came with only seven seconds left to go in the extra frame to lift the Lynx to victory over the Clippers. Sophie Green-Sermak had the other goal for LS and goalie Lucy Camara recorded 12 saves in the win

Nora Pepin and Tessa Nicastro both scored for Cumberland and goalie Emma Maccio collected for saves.

🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Division I

Classical 3, Chariho 0

Solid performances by Amaya Womack (17 kills and 1 ace), Marlowe Castile (6 kills and 6 aces) and Dara Agramonte (4 kills, 20 assists, 5 digs) helped the Purple sweep the Chargers, 25-12, 25-20, 25-17.

For Chariho, Emma McGovern recorded 6 kills, Nicole Raymond had 9 digs and Abby Tiernan dished off 10 assists in the loss.

Barrington 3, Cranston West 0

Riley Fogarty led the Eagles’ attack with 14 kills and added five digs, while Charlotte Farrell contributed eight kills and two blocks. Melissa Freshman directed the offense with 22 assists and chipped in nine digs as Barrington controlled play throughout the straight-set victory, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22.

For the Falcons, Emily Nodzis paced the defense with 17 digs in the loss.

Portsmouth 3, East Providence 0

The Patriots rode two nip-and-tuck sets into a sweep at home.

Peyton Winn continued her standout season as Portsmouth captured a 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 victory. Winn finished with four aces, 10 kills and four blocks and Kamryn Lehner steered the offense with two aces, five digs and 20 assists. Audrey Abedon added three aces, seven kills and 14 digs.

Portsmouth and East Providence are back in action on Wednesday at South Kingstown and Classical.

Prout 3, East Greenwich 0

The Crusaders were led by Brooke Rutherford, who dished out 18 assists, while Gabby Andrade anchored the defense with 22 digs. Josie Torok added six kills to help power the offense to the straight-sets win (25-22, 25-20, 25-20).

The Avengers were paced by Sarah Nula and Sasha Lattenist, who each recorded three kills and three digs.

🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Division II

North Smithfield 3, Burrillville 0

The play of Olivia Majeau (20 assists, 6 aces and 4 kills) and Quin Crowshaw (5 aces and 5 kills) helped secure the Northmen’s sweep (25-9, 25-13 and 25-19) of the Broncos

For Burrillville in the loss, Sophie Mekdsy recorded 28 digs, 3 kills and 1 ace, Macey Polacek had 3 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs and Ariana McNamara was good for 3 digs, 3 kills and 2 assists.

Pilgrim 3, Bay View 0

The Patriots earned a straight-set victory behind a strong all-around performance from Peyton Martin, who had seven aces and eight kills, while Bria Rhilinger added five kills in the win.

The Bengals were paced by Lili Safran, who recorded six aces and nine digs, while Mia Kumar contributed 11 digs.

Middletown 3, West Warwick 1

Francesca Vidotto paced the Islanders with eight aces and five digs, while Nour Chamseddine added five kills. After West Warwick evened the match with a dominant second-set win, Middletown responded by taking the final two sets to secure the victory, 25-21, 10-25, 25-17 and 25-22.

For the Wizards, Sophia Muschiano recorded eight kills and two aces, while Jazlyne Pineda contributed four aces and 10 digs in the loss.

🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Division III

St. Raphael 3, Narragansett 0

The Saints beat the Mariners in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-18), paced by Makayla McDermott who had eight aces and 14 assists, while Isabel Candelario contributed five aces, 20 digs and a kill. Leah Ahmed added seven kills, eight digs and four aces in the win.

Narragansett was led by Ella Boyd, who finished with six kills, four aces, 12 digs and two blocks. Mar Guimera Fonrodona chipped in with five aces, 12 assists, two digs and a kill in the loss.

Mount Pleasant 3, Times2 0

The Kilties were led by Kianny Contreras, who recorded 10 aces, six kills and two blocks. Leslianny Contreras also made a strong impact, recording four aces, four kills and a block, while Alicia Mensah helped run the offense with 10 assists and added an ace in the win (25-10, 25-22, 25-21).

Providence Country Day 3, Rogers 1

The Knights rallied from a first-set loss to defeat the Vikings Monday night (18-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16).

MaggieTuthill led PCD with seven kills and two digs, while Rosgaly Perez added four kills. Lily Darden directed the offense with 26 assists and also contributed two kills, one block and three digs.

For Rogers, Miranda Ventura paced the Vikings with four aces and four kills. Riley Ahern recorded three aces and eight assists, while Sosefina Lui contributed two aces, four kills and two blocks.

🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – Nonleague

Westerly 3, Fitch 0

The Bulldogs were balanced offensively, with Svea Crawford, Ella Reyes and Gemma Fusaro each recording six kills. Allison Maranda directed the attack with 11 assists while adding three aces, two kills and four digs in the win ( 25-17, 25-15, 25-13).

Crawford also contributed four digs, while Reyes chipped in two digs and Fusaro added an assist and two digs.
