Hawaiian Airlines Officially Joins oneworld As Alliance’s 3rd US-Based Member

Hawaiian Airlines has become the latest carrier to join the oneworld alliance. This marks the third United States carrier to join the alliance, after American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. This is the latest chapter in Hawaiian’s story, following its acquisition by Alaska Air Group in 2024.

This move will see oneworld have an even greater reach across the Pacific, with Hawaiian offering a unique network of domestic and international flights from its home at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), including Rarotonga (Cook Islands), Pago Pago (American Samoa), and Papeete (French Polynesia).

Hawaiian already operates 230 daily flights to, from, and within the Aloha state and last year transported more than 11 million passengers across its network. Its move into the oneworld alliance will support customers’ journeys with more seamless transitions onto the wider network, including to destinations across the Middle East, Australia, Asia, and North America.

For Hawaiian, it already serves several key oneworld hubs, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), allowing travelers to transit easily onto other oneworld carriers. The carrier’s Chief Executive Officer, Diana Birkett Rakow, spoke about how the alliance benefits passengers.

”We are thrilled to join this extended ‘ohana, or family of the world’s best airlines. oneworld brings significant global travel benefits to our guests, including Atmos Rewards loyalty members and Hawai‘i residents. Our Hawaiian Airlines team members look forward to welcoming oneworld guests onboard from around the world, sharing their aloha and warm Hawaiian hospitality, and inspiring visitors to appreciate Hawai‘i’s culture, environment, and people.”

oneworld is the third largest global alliance by number of passengers carried, with more than 490 million passengers per year. The alliance has approximately 13,000 daily departures to more than 1,000 airports in 170 countries. Other partner airlines include American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines.

The alliance’s headquarters are in Fort Worth, Texas, and, including all airline partners, the total fleet size reaches close to 3,300 aircraft. It was founded by American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas back in 1998, and became operational in 1999.

Hawaiian celebrates becoming the third carrier in the US to join the alliance, and becomes the second airline in the Pacific Islands to join oneworld after Fiji Airways. For travelers, the alliance offers several additional benefits, including smoother transfers, greater support, access to round-the-world fares, cooperation with frequent flyer programs, wider recognition, and access to lounges and additional codeshare agreements on connecting flights.

What’s Next For Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian is now the 16th full member of the oneworld alliance, and Atmos Rewards members, and Hawaiian travelers will now enjoy added benefits on more complex itineraries. Since the airline was acquired by Alaska Air Group, there has been plenty of noise about whether the Hawaiian brand may disappear, and this was exacerbated by moving to a single air operator’s certificate and the dissolution of the HA callsign. Alaska has reassured loyal Hawaiian fans that it has no immediate plans to absorb the brand.

The airline group continues to optimize its network and is adjusting several routes between the mainland US and Hawaii, as well as to other international destinations. The Airbus A321 and, especially, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner have been a hot topic, with Alaska taking several of its new aircraft to support the launch of long-haul international services from Seattle to destinations such as Rome and London.

According to ch-aviation, Hawaiian has a fleet of 71 aircraft, including 19 Boeing 717s, 18 Airbus A321neo, 24 Airbus A330-200s, and 10 Airbus A330-300s. Additionally, 10 A330-300P2F are operated as cargo aircraft in a contract with Amazon Air. The airline operates to 31 destinations across the Hawaiian Islands, the US, Asia, and the Southwest Pacific.
