God of War Laufey will release on 16th February 2027.

Confirmation came via a fresh announcement earlier today (Saturday 25th July) at San Diego Comic-Con and social media, which confirmed we will be able to “enter the afterlife of the gods” when Laufey launches on PS5 in February next year.

“I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you’ll encounter are unexpected. Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next,” Cory Barlog said at the panel.

The God of War Laufey reveal was one of the biggest in this year’s Summer Game Fest season, and part of a record-breaking State of Play. The surprise reveal generated plenty of discussion, but most of the talk centered on the game’s new protagonist, Faye. And according to Faye actress Deborah Ann Woll, the idea existed all the way back when the reboot was released in 2018, nearly 10 years ago.

But the star remains gloriously unbothered by the negative criticism the game reveal has triggered. Woll recently said she’s “totally unbothered” by the backlash surrounding the upcoming game because she knows “it’s great”.

God of War Laufey is in development exclusively for PS5.

We had a feeling the game would release before January 2028, as Santa Monica Studio had explicitly confirmed that the next GoW game “will be available on disc”, presumably to quieten the backlash around Sony’s shock news that it’s halting physical media as of January 2028.

Sony’s decision to end all physical media on PlayStation, including for games not published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, was announced on 1st July. All releases from January 2028 onwards will be digital-only, including code-in-the-box-style options at retail.

What’s definitely not happening with Laufey, however, is a PC port, as Sony no longer intends to release its non-live-service games on PC.
