Game of Thrones is finally getting the PC game we’ve been waiting for next year

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros has reemerged over a year after its announcement, although that also came with the news that it will now launch in 2027.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game based on the HBO show. The RTS title is being developed by PlaySide, the publisher of Mouse: P.I. For Hire, and was supposed to release this year. It has flown under the radar since its reveal during a crowded Summer Game Fest 2025 kickoff showcase, but attracted some attention again when a delay to “early 2027” was confirmed last week.

War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027,” PlaySide stated in a Steam blog post. “We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for.”

Alongside the delay announcement, PlaySide’s post features brief gameplay clips showcasing its factions, hero abilities, heavy cavalry units, and large maps. If you enjoy series like Total War, War for Westeros looks like itoffers a similar RTS experience with Game of Thrones flair. If PlaySide can deliver, War for Westeros could easily become the best game based on this franchise yet.

Despite Game of Thrones’ popularity as a franchise over the past decade, Warner Bros. has failed to properly capitalize on that in the video game medium. Telltale’s oft-forgotten Game of Thrones title and Reigns: Game of Thrones were pretty good, but otherwise the series has been relegated mostly to mobile games that aren’t for everyone.

While Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is reportedly prioritizing Game of Thrones as a primary franchise going forward, War for Westeros should still launch long before whatever comes from that effort. While delays are sometimes disappointing, in War for Westeros‘ case, it was actually a nice reminder that the game exists and is heading toward a full release on Windows PC in 2027.
