Chicago O’Hare International Airport(ORD) is the world’s busiest airport by flight movements. United Airlines and American Airlines have a major presence at the airport and operate a large share of its domestic and regional flights. Frontier Airlines also has a sizeable operation at the airport and gives passengers a low-cost alternative to the two major carriers.
The ultra-low-cost carrier’s O’Hare network covers major US cities, leisure destinations, and popular sun markets. The airline regularly adjusts its schedule based on demand. Simple Flying compared Frontier’s scheduled departures from O’Hare in September with those planned for September 2025. The comparison shows that Frontier has cut eight routes from the airport.
Which Frontier Airlines Routes Are Absent From O’Hare In September?
According to scheduled data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, Frontier has cut its scheduled flights from Chicago O’Hare by 9% in September compared with the same month last year. The routes that have been removed are Nashville International Airport (BNA), 
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU), 
San Diego International Airport (SAN), Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), Tampa International Airport (TPA), 
Cancun International Airport (CUN), and 
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Most of the affected routes last operated in May and are not scheduled to return for the remainder of the year.
Cancún is an exception. Frontier last operated the route on August 17 and plans to resume the service on October 8. The route has been a relatively consistent part of Frontier’s O’Hare network since its launch. The budget carrier normally operates the service daily, although it has reduced frequencies during the late-summer period in previous years. Phoenix also appears to be temporarily suspended. Frontier last operated the route in May and is scheduled to resume service on October 8. The airline plans to operate four weekly flights when the service returns.

Two Routes New To September’s Schedule
Furthermore, Frontier is operating two routes in September 2026 that it did not operate in the same period last year. The services are from Chicago O’Hare to 
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in San Juan. For some time, Frontier has expanded its presence in several markets where Spirit Airlines reduced flights over the past year.
Fort Lauderdale is one of the routes the airline added during this period. The airline launched the service in November 2025 with three weekly flights. It now operates the service daily using its 240-seat Airbus A321neo aircraft. US Department of Transportation data shows that the service recorded an 85.94% load factor for the 12 months through May 2026.
San Juan, meanwhile, is a returning service for Frontier. The airline reinstated the Chicago O’Hare–San Juan route in March, after last operating it in 2022. It currently operates one daily flight on the route, although the service is scheduled to end on September 8. It will return on November 20 before another short suspension at the end of November. The airline will then resume the route on December 17 and operate it daily through the end of the month.
O’Hare Slips In Frontier Network
Chicago has long been an important market for Frontier. In May 2024, the carrier reopened its Chicago crew and pilot base, which it had closed in 2022. The base supports operations at both Chicago O’Hare and Chicago Midway. It currently schedules up to 17 daily departures from the two Chicago airports combined. At O’Hare, Frontier has 324 departures scheduled for September, providing around 74,506 seats.

The airport has fallen from 11th to 19th among the carrier’s busiest airports based on scheduled departures for the month. 
Denver International Airport (DEN) remains Frontier’s busiest airport in September, with more than 1,800 scheduled departures. Orlando International Airport (MCO) follows with 1,758 flights, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) ranks third with 1,748 departures.
