Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has confirmed its plans to stop operating from New York JFK Airport (JFK), after just two years of serving the airport. This will see the airline depart from the city’s busiest airport, as it winds down operations from early October. This won’t take much, as the budget airline axed most of its services at the airport earlier this year, and the sole link to Atlanta was the only one that remained.

Frontier confirmed to The Points Guy that a number of reasons have influenced this decision, including the ongoing high costs of serving the large airport. For those looking to fly with the airline, they will now be left with the city’s other two airports for Frontier flights: LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Frontier Airlines JFK Exit Date: October 5

Frontier has confirmed that its full exit from JFK will be on October 5, with the airline’s final flight from the airport destined for Atlanta. Aviation critics have long suggested that serving the airport was never going to work, and that the airline would continually battle with high operating costs while still trying to offer its budget fares.

Just last summer, Frontier served a total of eight nonstop routes from the airport and had been rumoured to be moving to the airport’s new Terminal 6, which is still under construction; however, the carrier has now confirmed it will exit the airport entirely, shifting its focus to LaGuardia and Newark. The airline’s statement on the service adjustment is below:

“We periodically review and update routes based on market demand, seasonality, costs associated with operating from a particular airport, and other factors.”

Refocusing New York Operations At Newark And LaGuardia

Frontier fans will now be expected to arrive and depart from New York from LaGuardia and Newark. From LaGuardia, the closest airport to downtown Manhattan, Frontier serves eight year-round destinations and one seasonal, while from Newark the airline has five year-round ultra-low-cost routes. Frontier’s exit from JFK comes after a brief two years of serving the airport. In June 2024, the airline started serving the busiest New York airport, as part of a major airline network shakeup.

At Newark, the airline has advised that despite the demise of Spirit Airlines, which was the second-largest airline at the New Jersey airport, the airline hasn’t necessarily made many moves to backfill Spirit’s routes. The airline did comment that it may look at new markets in the future.

Might Not Be The Final Time We See Frontier At New York JFK

While October 5 is now confirmed as the final date for Frontier services at JFK, the airline did suggest that goodbye might not be forever. The airline’s station closure doesn’t mean that the airline cannot reconsider its options if market conditions demand a return at a later date.

Frontier is an ultra-low-cost carrier, which means that most things come for a fee. The airline sells no-frills fares; services such as bag check, seat selection, and meals require an additional fee. The airline operates to more than 120 destinations across the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America, and maintains 13 operating bases across the country and Puerto Rico.

The airline maintains a fleet of more than 170 aircraft, which are all part of the Airbus A320 family, including the A320-200, A320neo, A321-200, and A321neo. It has more than 150 new aircraft on order, including the A320neo and A321neo. Aircraft capacity can seat between 180 and 240 passengers in an all-economy-class layout.

Frontier’s decision to abandon its post at New York JFK will see the airline shift its focus to the two other New York airports, still leaving plenty of choice for passengers who are attracted to the carrier’s budget fares.
