TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Macklem speech

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem will give a speech in Halifax on Monday. The central bank kept its key interest rate on hold at 2.25 per cent earlier this month, but said that risks for inflation have increased and new tariffs have made economic growth prospects more uncertain.

House returns

The MPs will return to the House of Commons on Monday as the fall sitting begins. Trade and the economy are expected to be top of mind they return to Ottawa and deal with new U.S. tariffs and Canada’s response.

Elevate conference

The Elevate tech conference starts in Toronto on Tuesday. AI will be a hot topic at the meeting with discussions on what is coming for the technology and how it is reshaping the world. The conference comes amid an ongoing debate over the speed of AI development and safety.

Retail sales

Statistics Canada will release its July figures for retail sales on Thursday. The agency’s advance estimate released last month suggested sales fell 0.8 per cent in July, following an increase of 0.6 per cent in June.

Banff conference

The annual Global Business Forum conference in Banff, Alta., starts on Thursday. The two-day meeting brings together business, academic and government leaders.
