First-person Soulslike Valor Mortis is already making a profit after seven days, despite launching against some stiff competition

Developer One More Level is wall-running toward another big success with its recently-released first-person Soulslike, Valor Mortis, which has already broken even after its first week.

The studio best known for shoot-and-slash series Ghostrunner celebrated the milestone earlier today. “We are beyond proud to announce that Valor Mortis has officially reached a break-even point in just seven days,” the developer wrote in a recent social media post.

“This incredible milestone wouldn’t be possible with you,” it added. “Thank you for answering the Emperor’s call and believing in our vision!”

Breaking even means Valor Mortis has officially made back the money that was spent on its production – every sale from here on out is presumably pure profit for One More Level and the game’s publisher, Lyrical Games.

What makes the achievement even more impressive is that Valor Mortis came out in perhaps the most hectic period for new games we’ve seen in years. The inevitable black hole known as GTA 6 understandably crammed tons of games into the months before and after its November release date – heavy hitters such as Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Silent Hill Townfall, Gears of War: E-Day, Marvel’s Wolverine, and many more launched mere weeks or sometimes even days apart from each other. (Take a look at our upcoming games calendar and you’ll see what I mean.)

Still, the historical first-person action game managed to grapple to success largely thanks to a warm reception. Eurogamer’s Valor Mortis review praised the ways in which it went above and beyond the typical Soulslike formula. Here’s what our Matt Wales had to say: “Valor Mortis is a delight; a gloriously entertaining Soulslike whose fluid foundational combat and cleverly designed enemy encounters would probably be enough on their own. But then One More Level goes further: the exhilarating parkour, the thrilling sense of momentum that shapes everything from the intricate level design and memorable bosses to the sword- and gunplay, elevating it further.”

One More Level was also pretty open about releasing a game during such a chaotic time. The developer previously explained that Valor Mortis costs £40/$40 because it knew “this fall is stacked and there’s high demand for your time and money.” The studio smartly pushed the game out of its original 24th September release date, too, which would’ve had it going toe-to-to with both Control Resonant and Silent Hill Townfall.

Valor Mortis launched last week across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Game Pass. When asked about DLC and future patches, the dev simply replied “Working on it!”
