I’m pretty sure that by this point, Square Enix have shown up to every major gaming showcase this summer with something Final Fantasy 7 Revelation related (even if that German Geoff Night one was mostly a waste of everyone’s time). However! The latest trailer offered the one thing that I know is on everyone’s mind: will Cloud drive a motorbike again. Oh, and a release date.

As it turns out, that spring release window translates to April 8th, almost exactly six years after the first part launched. And yes, for those wondering, Cloud does in fact ride a motorbike in this one, and seemingly during a boss fight with one of those kaiju-sized ultimate weapons. The trailer itself was mostly a highlight reel of the many characters you can play as; there were no major story bits outside of showing that Zack and Aerith get to, at long last, hang out again (no one tell the Clerith shippers (maybe tell the Cloti ones though)).

There was also a lengthy look at gameplay that in execution felt a tad awkward, but in that way that playing a game actually feels, rather than the polished kind of approach most gameplay showcases take. Some neat highlights from the trailer include putting your beloved pet chocobo to work by forcing them into mortal combat, you get a hookshot that appears to add some nice verticality to exploring the world, there’s an in-game camera that lets you take pictures of cute cats (and other things), and depending on the character you pick to lead on certain sidequests, the storylines may diverge.

Interestingly, despite not being spoken about during this latest showcase, the tiniest sliver of details were shared about the game’s story expansion pass. Namely, there’ll be two lots of it, and one will focus on Mr. Handsome Vampire Vincent and the Turks, and the other will follow walking shampoo ad Sephiroth. Vincent certainly makes sense, he’s a fan favourite and did get his own game in the form of Dirge of Cerberus, though whether this follows up on that or acts as its own thing is another question.

Sephiroth, on the other hand, I’m wary of. Square Enix obviously partially expanded upon his story in Crisis Core, and more recently in the soon to be shutting down Ever Crisis, which is already a tad too much. Keep the mystery alive, Square! Or, you know, make money, whatever.
