Feds spending $145M for security at Toronto, Vancouver FIFA World Cup events

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup fast approaching, the federal government is spending $145 million to help with security across Toronto and Vancouver. CBC’s Lane Harrison breaks down the details from BMO Field.

The federal government is allocating up to $145 million for security during the upcoming World Cup.

Canada is co-hosting with the United States and Mexico, with thirteen matches scheduled to take place in Toronto and Vancouver this June and July.

The government said in a new release the funding is in response to “specific operational needs identified by the host provinces and cities.”

It said the funding will reduce financial pressure on the cities and provinces and ensure public safety agencies have the necessary resources.

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said at a news conference in Toronto Wednesday that hosting an event at this scale requires a “massive, coordinated security effort.”

“Whether you’re at a match or enjoying the FIFA fan festival … fans will be able to rest assured that you are protected,” he said.

Ottawa previously allocated up to $320 million for hosting the tournament.
