Family’s narrow escape before earthquake shakes home

A family captured video of the moment they fled their home during an earthquake in Colombia.

Liliana Pérez Ocampo and her family escaped moments before their home was rocked by a 7.4 magnitude quake on Monday.

“At first, we thought it was just a mild tremor like the ones that usually happen in Colombia, but when more than 30 seconds passed and everything was shaking harder, we realised it was an earthquake,” the mother-of-four told the BBC World Service.

Her family, including two young children at school, are safe.

“In the end, material things can be replaced,” she said. “The most important thing is life, and we have that.”

With at least 169 people killed, this has been the strongest earthquake to hit Colombia in the 21st Century, according to the country’s Geological Service.
