Faker has added another unique accolade to his legendary career after the League of Legends icon was appointed as an Honorary Police Officer and Cyber Gambling Prevention Ambassador in South Korea.

While he’s best known for dominating the professional League of Legends scene and winning multiple World Championships, Faker is now using his influence away from esports to help tackle youth cyber gambling in his home country.

Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok is widely regarded as the greatest League of Legends player of all time. Since making his professional debut in 2013, the T1 mid laner has won six League of Legends World Championships, multiple LCK titles, and became the first inductee into Riot Games’ Hall of Legends, cementing his place as one of esports’ biggest stars.

Now, the Korean National Police Agency has appointed Faker as an Honorary Police Officer and Cyber Gambling Prevention Ambassador during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.

Faker joins South Korea’s campaign against youth cyber gambling

The appointment is designed to help promote the National Police Agency’s youth cyber gambling voluntary self-reporting program while raising awareness of the dangers of online gambling among young people. According to Maeil Business, Faker will appear in promotional videos and posters as a result.

As released in a statement by South Korea’s National Police Agency, Faker said: “It is an honor to be appointed as an Honorary Police Officer and public ambassador, and I feel a great sense of responsibility that comes with the role. I will actively participate in my duties as an ambassador by helping raise awareness of the dangers of cyber gambling among young people and promoting the voluntary self-reporting program.”

The latest recognition comes just months after South Korean President Lee Jae-myung awarded Faker the Cheongnyong (Blue Dragon) Medal, the highest sporting honor awarded by the South Korean government. The award made Faker the first esports player ever to receive the country’s top class of the Order of Sport Merit.

With another prestigious honor added to his name, Faker continues to expand his influence beyond esports, this time using his platform to support a nationwide effort aimed at protecting young people from online gambling.
