Expanding Canadian trade, investment and jobs in the Indo-Pacific region through Canadian Trade Gateway for Nuclear Development

November 21, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit last week in Lima, Peru, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada’s vision to strengthen nuclear partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region through the Canadian Trade Gateway for Nuclear Development. Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development, highlighted this exciting milestone in the implementation of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS).

As a world leader in the nuclear sector, Canada has an important role to play in sharing its expertise, know-how and best practices to help the Indo-Pacific region meet its climate and energy security goals and ensure the highest levels of safety, security and non-proliferation are upheld. This is why the gateway will focus on a sector where Canada’s expertise can respond to the region’s evolving needs and deepen Canadian relationships with local stakeholders.

The gateway will also increase opportunities for Canadian businesses working in the nuclear industry to grow their engagement in the region, creating good, well-paying jobs. It will also strengthen commercial and investment ties between the economies of Canada and Indo-Pacific countries.
