Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin’s The Mummy looks terrifying

A new teaser trailer for The Mummy has just released, and if you’re confused about why there’s no Tom Cruise or Brendan Fraser (following the announcement of his return to his 1999 franchise), there’s a good reason. Evil Dead Rise and The Hole in the Ground director Lee Cronin has his own mummy flick, which is officially titled Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.

This non-Universal, New Line Cinema flick is actually quite scary looking, emphasizing horror instead of adventure, as it follows a family whose daughter has disappeared, only to return eight years later with mysterious ties to the undead and ancient Egyptian history. The teaser above doesn’t really delve into any specific plot points, but it does set the film’s atmosphere. A young woman in a sarcophagus is unearthed and unwrapped from her mummification. But it would appear that disturbing her tomb has unleashed an otherworldly force, with Katie serving as its vessel.

Filming began in early 2025, with Jack Reynor and Laia Costa set as the leads, before being rounded out by Verónica Falcón, Moon Knight‘s May Calamawy, May Elghety, and Natalie Grace.

Cronin told IGN that one of his primary goals was to hone in on the dark rituals and mystery of mummification, evoking Se7en, while also grounding the story in a Poltergeist-style family dynamic. “I’m an Amblin kid, a child of Spielberg, no doubt. I was massively influenced by that. So when I talk about Poltergeist, what I mean is the domestic circumstances and the warmth of the family. And when I talk about Seven, what I mean is the dark, investigative angle and the secrets that exist behind it. And they are two aspects within two different tram lines, but two places that I love and I’m trying to bring them together in center court.”

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is set to shamble to theaters with its arms extended on April 17.
