Evidence mounts to suggest Ubisoft really is about to announce an Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake

Ubisoft has re-uploaded a sizable selection of sea shanties from Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, the latest indication that a remake announcement is imminent.

Found as the latest video uploads on the Ubisoft Music YouTube channel, a collection of sailing bangers including Over the Hills and Far Away and Spanish Ladies can be enjoyed in all their glory. A few comments have even been made by early birds, including one by Spriteking3944 who wrote: “Very subtle release Ubisoft”.

What are they talking about? Well, the Black Flag remake is perhaps the most poorly kept secret in Ubisoft’s repertoire as of writing. Back in August of last year, voice actor Matt Ryan claimed legal action was brought against him by Ubisoft after cheekily hinting at its existence at a convention.

Then, last November, Ubisoft financial reports stated an unannounced title was due to release in the fourth quarter of this financial year. If that wasn’t enough, a PEGI listing for a Black Flag remake was spotted in December, ahead of The Game Awards. This isn’t even the first hint at a Black Flag remake this year, with a Raid: Shadow Legends collaboration with Ubisoft and Assassin’s Creed leading many to further expect its imminent reveal.

These music tracks, which on their lonesome appear to be just a part of a continued archival process by Ubisoft for its music library, is yet more sponge on the ever-growing Black Flag remake layer cake. When we’ll see it properly revealed, or whether we will at all, remains a mystery.

If you’ve not played Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, why not read Eurogamer’s review! In it, Tom Bradwell noted: “Edward doesn’t have the impish wit of fan favourite Ezio Auditore, against whom all Assassin’s Creed protagonists are destined to be measured, but in the end he felt more rounded to me. The revelation, though, is the treasure of a game he stars in.”
