Estimates, election law changes and Indian Act registration on the agenda


What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

With just days to go before the chamber shuts down for the final extended hiatus before the final stretch of the sitting, several Team Carney front benchers are set to appear before their respective home committees to go over the latest estimates, including Canadian Identity Marc Miller at CANADIAN HERITAGE (11 a.m.), and Government Transformation Minister Joël Lightbound and Treasury Board President Shafqat Ali at GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND ESTIMATES. (3:30 p.m.)

For his part, Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon is booked in for a one-hour session at PROCEDURE AND HOUSE AFFAIRS to field questions on his government’s proposal to update federal election laws. (11 a.m.)

Later this afternoon, Secretary of State (Nature) Nathalie Provost will brief ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT members on her government’s “strategy to protect nature.” (3:30 p.m.)

Over at INDIGENOUS AND NORTHERN AFFAIRS members continue to examine the fine print of the government’s proposal to overhaul the current Indian Act registration entitlements during back-to-back presentations from Manitoba Sen. Mary Jane McCallum, Mohawk Council of Kahnawake chief Jeremiah Johnson and Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs secretary Marilyn Slett, as well as a panel of stakeholders that includes former Ulkatcho First Nation chief Lynda Price and her son, NHL hockey player Carey Price. (11 a.m.)

Also this morning:

  • NATURAL RESOURCES members resume their self-initiated review of Canada’s energy exports with Unifor national president Lana Payne and Candu Energy’s Todd Smith. (11 a.m.)
  • INTERNATIONAL TRADE members hear more expert testimony on Canada’s trade with North and West Africa before getting an update on internal trade from representatives of the Canadian Pork Council and Quebec International. (11 a.m.)
  • AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD members explore the current state of business risk management programs within the agriculture sector. (11 a.m.)

On the afternoon circuit: FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT members will hear from Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign head William Browder, Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights policy director Brandon Silver and a full contingent of senior departmental officials as part of their ongoing study of Conservative MP James Bezan’s backbench pitch to extend the current sanction regime. (3:30 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, the SPECIAL JOINT COMMITTEE ON THE EXERCISE OF POWERS UNDER THE BUILDING CANADA ACT get an progress report from Major Projects Office vice-president Peter Feldberg and general counsel Rob Van Walleghem. (6:30 p.m.)
