England hit the highest one-day international total at Lord’s to beat India by 27 runs and seal a thrilling 2-1 series victory.

Opener Ben Duckett made the biggest men’s ODI individual score at the Home of Cricket in striking 141 off 135 balls as the hosts posted 383-7, surpassing the previous mark of 334-4 by England against the same opponents in 1975.

Duckett shared an opening stand of 192 with Jacob Bethell, who fell for 91, before finally chipping a return catch to Prince Yadav in the 44th over after smacking 18 fours and a six.

Joe Root helped drive England to their formidable total, hitting an unbeaten 74 from 48 balls for his sixth consecutive score of 50 or more in ODIs, while Jos Buttler added a blistering unbeaten 41 off 13 deliveries late on.

Asked to reach what would have been the second-highest winning target in the format’s history, India remained in the hunt deep in the game thanks to Rohit Sharma’s superb 138.

The 39-year-old, who is rumoured to be retiring at the end of the series, was in sparkling form, hitting 17 fours and five sixes in his 111-ball knock.

He put on his own stand of 147 with Shubman Gill, who struck 77 before he was trapped lbw by Adil Rashid.

Rohit’s dismissal in the 38th over, bowled round his legs by Bethell, was the decisive moment in the match, leaving Virat Kohli to attempt to take India to victory as the required run-rate spiralled.

Kohli saw the remainder of the India middle-order dismissed cheaply, and he himself was then caught in the covers off the bowling of Sam Curran for 74, effectively ending the tourists’ challenge.

India’s tail continued to hit boundaries, but their target was too great and they finished on 360-7.
