- Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro & Josh Brolin are all returning for ‘Sicario 3.’
- Padraic McKinley is aboard to direct.
- Steven Knight worked on the script.
The last time we heard about a third ‘Sicario’ movie, it was star Josh Brolin assuring us all that it was on the way, with Taylor Sheridan –- who wrote the first two –– back on script duty.
Well, it turns out he was half right. Because, according to Deadline, ‘Sicario 3’ is indeed moving ahead with Brolin joined by fellow veteran Benicio Del Toro and, in more surprising news, Emily Blunt, who appeared in the original but skipped the sequel.

As to the “half right” bit… Well, it turns out Sheridan is a little too busy running his TV empire to return to craft the screenplay, so ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight (no stranger to being a busy, in-demand writer himself), will instead handle that part of the process.
Shooting should kick off at the start of the year with ‘The Weight’s Padraic McKinley directing.

What’s the story of ‘Sicario’?

In 2015’s ‘Sicario’, directed by Denis Villeneuve, Matt Graver (Brolin) recruits FBI agent Kate (Blunt) to a government task force, led by the mysterious Alejandro (Del Toro), hunting down Mexican cartel bosses in the escalating war against drugs.
2018 brought the Stefano Sollima-directed sequel, which featured Isabela Merced in Blunt’s absence, and saw Graver re-teaming with the mercurial Alejandro.
Not much is known about the plot for the new movie, but we can expect gunplay and danger as usual.
When will ‘Sicario 3’ be in theaters?
With production planned for the start of 2027, it could theoretically be in theaters later that year, but 2028 seems more likely and the movie doesn’t have a distributor in place yet (Lionsgate released the first two).
