Ellie Goulding left Wimbledon’s tennis ball pumps to the method dressing crowd on Thursday, arriving for day four at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Chloé’s barely there Matilda sandals, a dotted silk mini from the house and Mulberry’s black Bayswater bag.

The “Lights” singer wore the black version of Chloé’s $1,095 Matilda, a 90mm sandal built from slender leather straps over a brown suede footbed. Two knotted bands framed the open toe, meeting around a small gold-tone bar, while a narrow strap ran up the center of the foot to connect with the buckled ankle fastening. The dark brown sole curved into a slim heel that narrowed on its way down, leaving the black upper to read almost like a line drawing against her foot.

She paired her Chloé sandals with the French luxury house’s long-sleeve minidress in black silk jacquard, covered in polka dots of various sizes. An exaggerated ruffle followed the V-neckline and spread over the shoulders, with fabric-covered buttons continuing down the front.
Goulding repeated the shoes’ dark palette with Mulberry’s Bayswater in embossed black croc-effect leather, finished with two top handles and the house’s soft-gold Postman’s Lock.

The understated sandals took a less literal route than some of Wimbledon’s most discussed footwear this year. Maura Higgins arrived on Day One in pointed white slingbacks with miniature tennis balls set around the stilettos, revisiting the custom Loewe pumps Zendaya wore during the 2024 “Challengers” press tour. Zendaya’s white pair incorporated a bright green mini tennis ball into each heel, turning the sports reference into part of the shoe’s construction. Others, like Kate Middleton, went in a more tried-and-true direction; she completed a bright blue Gabriela Hearst suit with her gold Ralph Lauren Celia pumps.

Goulding also chose ruffles for the Serpentine Summer Party just a week earlier, wearing an off-the-shoulder black Matières Fécales top with wide-leg trousers. She attended Wimbledon with actor Beau Minniear, with whom she welcomed a daughter in March, and joined the day-four guests in the Royal Box. The singer is currently promoting “Black Prada Dress,” the lead single from her sixth album, “I Know Too Much,” due Sept. 4.
